This brightly painted wooden stela (@metmuseum 28.3.35) is from the Khokha tomb of Aafenmut, who lived during the reign of Osorkon I (22nd Dynasty, ca. 924-889 BCE). We will spend the next couple of posts on this stela, so let’s begin with the deity to the left. The god is labeled in the hieroglyphs immediately before his falcon head: Ra-Hr-Ax.ty “Re-Horus of the Horizon” (Re-Horakhty). The sun disk with stroke is ideographically Ra (r – ayin), the same name the Egyptians would give to the disk that is on his head; the solar disk crown also has a uraeus (ancient Egyptian iarr.t, the origin of the Greek word that we use), the same uraeus that often appears on royal crowns. The falcon hieroglyph writes Hr, the ancient Egyptian name for Horus, also reflected in the god’s falcon head (as Erik Hornung notes in Conceptions of God in Ancient Egypt, the use of the tripartite wig enables animal heads to be added more naturally to a human body without creating a monstrous form). The two oval signs following the falcon are for Ax.ty – a dual of the noun Ax.t “horizon,” but probably to be read as a nisbe of the singular Ax.t, so “He of the Horizon” (remember a nisbe is an adjective formed from a noun). What is so great about hieroglyphs is that they can visually signal “two horizons,” while using the dual ending to create an adjective. The association of Re-Horus of the Horizon with both the eastern and western horizons is indicated by the mummiform wrappings of this god: he is both the sun god in heaven, and Osiris (the mummiform god par excellence) in the Netherworld. Although bizarrely rejected by some Egyptologists, the solar-Osirian unity is at the very root of Egyptian religion – as my husband, John Darnell, pointed out so well in The Enigmatic Netherworld Books of the Solar-Osirian Unity.
