"The caribou feeds the wolf, but it is the wolf who keeps the caribou strong." - Inuit proverb, stressing the interrelationship between #predator and #prey.
We are calling on you to care. To take action to #stopthewolfcull. Over 300 wolves have been needlessly killed by government contractors in British Columbia in the last few years. This slaughter of wolves continues today and will carry on through the winter season. The cull was initiated in response to substantial declines in #endangered mountain caribou. But in order to save #caribou, the real need is to not continue killing wolves but rather to expand and enforce critical #habitatprotection for wildlife in B.C. Head to our Facebook page @PacificWild to watch urgent and breaking video footage @wildlifedefenceleague captured of one of the many #wolves that will be targeted and #killed this winter. Help us push for an end to this #waronwildlife.

Walking through airports and a few different cities recently reminded me how much we treasure domestic dogs in our lives. Yet, I can’t help but wonder how many people that smile when a dog walks by remain indifferent when they read about the government sponsored wolf kill programs that are under way, especially in #albertacanada and #britishcolumbiacanada. Millions of tax dollars are being spent on ineffectual predator kill programs to ostensibly save ungulates like caribou. We said it years ago and it remains true today. If you don’t protect habitat and you keep punching roads, oil and gas wells, mines, ski resorts, clearcuts, wind farms, houses etc etc into every last pocket of wilderness then killing every last predator in North American is not going to save these animals. #savebcwolves @pacificwild #stopthewolfcull
8/9: Yesterday, one of our Instagram followers asked us in our photo comments why there has been no attempt to reintroduce sea otters to the offshore islands of Haida Gwaii. This question compelled us to post these two photos today, one of which most of you will likely recognize as a popular photo of not only the #topnine2016 selection, but also graced the covers internationally of @natgeo magazine and recognized worldwide. Why did this question inspire us to post this photo of the sea wolf? Because Haida Gwaii is absent of wolves, grizzly bears, wolverines, cougars, and much of their ungulate prey, such as moose and mountain goats. Now Haida Gwaii residents debate whether wolves should be introduced to the islands. Deer were introduced to the islands a century ago, and the gentle browsers, in the absence of any natural predators, have done more to impact Haida Gwaii’s forest environment than the Haida people have managed to do in over 10,000 years. Introducing a non-native species to combat non-native species is a tough sell after so many examples gone wrong. But wolves may do well there, and if humans would tolerate them, they might just allow a broken generation of cedar forests to return. Head to pacificwild.org to learn more about how @pacificwild has made an effort to address one of the larger gaps in coastal carnivore ecology.

Today is the last day to ask the Canadian government to protect endangered caribou habitat and end the aerial gunning and expanded legalized hunting and trapping of wolves. To submit a comment, either head directly to the Species at Risk Public Registry, @wolf_awareness for a form, or head to the link upstairs at pacificwild.org to submit a letter expressing opposition. Wolves are social animals which are integral to ecosystem function. They deserve protection and should not be exterminated because the B.C. government has continually failed to protect and recover enough habitat for caribou. Gross mismanagement of species at risk in B.C., a province with no endangered species law, results in unethical culls of predators and competing species, such as wolves, cougars, deer and moose. There are solutions and alternatives to protecting B.C.'s caribou, but killing animals should not be one of them.

Swipe left: above are images of the same wolf featured yesterday, this time alongside the voices of wolf biologists Mary and John Theberge. Thank you to everyone who sent in a letter yesterday to ask the Canadian government to protect endangered caribou habitat and end the aerial gunning of wolves. The public comment period has now closed, but caribou, their habitat, wolves and more, are still at risk. We encourage you to sign our petition, continue sending letters voicing opposition, share these posts and tag others, support education online and face-to-face, and donate to our efforts: link upstairs. Post 2/2:
Over the past week, April 2018, media headlines read as follows:
— "Caribou on the Brink: B.C. Herd Reduced to Three Females Points to Failure to Protect Endangered Species” writes @DeSmogCanada —
— “The battle to save the so-called gray ghosts — the only herd of caribou in the lower 48 states — has been lost,” @nytimes headline reads —
— “Last caribou in lower 48 US states all but extinct: 'The herd is functionally lost’”, says @guardian —
— “'It’s game over': Last 'Grey Ghost' caribou herd is down to just three members, all female” reports @nationalpost —
.
B.C.'s Mountain Caribou Recovery Implementation Plan, now over 10 years old, has protected logging, industrial development and recreation at the expense of wildlife - both caribou and wolves. Three years ago, the B.C. government implemented a massive wolf control plan with the low probability of recovering a few small, isolated, range-edge herds of mountain caribou. Nearly 100 wolves were killed last year in the South Peace and South Selkirk areas combined. But a recent aerial count found only three caribou in the South Selkirk herd survived the winter - a devastating example of Canada’s failure to protect endangered and threatened species. “The functional loss of this herd is the legacy of decades of government mismanagement across caribou range,” said Mark Hebblewhite, a Canadian wildlife biologist at @umontana. “It’s all about habitat. You can do everything you want; you can kill wolves, you can kill invasive predators, you can kill species like moose … but without habitat what you’re doing is just buying time".
The current approach to kill one species to save another is clearly not working: #takeaction to #stopthewolfcull and #savebcwolves at the link in our profile.
