My God. This realization still chokes me up. So many years spent blaming my father, trying to figure out why my romantic relationships always left me feeling abandoned and worthless.
He wasn’t there full time so it musta been his fault right?
Only in this healing journey did I learn that my first love, my first worship was of her, not him.
I’d do anything for her approval, her attention, her acceptance, her love.
I believed I didn’t deserve more and I was to blame. So I learned to ask for less and work extra hard.
I took on this juvenile and maladapted formula for love as a child and it carried (and sometimes still carries) on into my teenage and adult intimate relationships.
After all, I’m still trying to get those same needs met. And I was looking in familiar places expecting to find something different.
And every time I was still shocked and hurt when I got the same results I got way back then.
The good news is, I’m willing to tell the truth about it. I’m willing to calling a spade a spade and put my healing first...above all others.
And as I heal my black mother wound my decisions in relationships reflect that healing. I deserve acceptance and love.
It’s not something to work for.
And when ya girl feels like she’s slipping into old familiar territory, I give myself the grace and permission to walk away...quickly.
I’m no longer looking for someone fix my old pain. I do need someone patient tho cuz I’m learning to love myself I’m a whole new way.
This has been an unexpected gift of healing and it confirms why this work is so vital and important.
This is the work.

A feminist is a person who believes in the power of women as much as they believe in the power of anyone else. It's equity, it's fairness and I think it's a great thing to be a part of. Feminist is not an insult. .
