Hi friends! As I approach my second Adult Health and Pharmacology exams, I wanted to share with you how I prepared for my first exam and what I’ve changed for the exams coming up.
•
: First I reviewed my PowerPoint’s and then I wrote out each disease process’s clinical manifestations, causes, populations at risk, risks of the disease, Tx, how it’s Dx, and anything extra my professor wanted us to focus on on a dry erase board. This made it easier for me to make connections and differentiate the s/s of one disease from another. Picmonic provides countless videos on each concept and I found it helpful to do a quick review before bed so that I am receiving the information visually as well. It helps me know where the gaps in my learning are and what I need to further review. After that I do practice questions from my Success book!
For my second exam I am making a study guide so that my thoughts are more organized but it contains all of the same information listed above.
•
: I separate the medications by class and wrote out the drugs we needed to know in that class along with it’s indications, adverse reactions, contraindications, and any blackbox warnings or anything significant my professor wanted us to know about that drug. I suggest using different colors to organize your information because it can get overwhelming if everything looks the same. For example, I put black box warnings in red and indications for use in green. My FAVORITE pens are the PaperMate Inkjoy gel pens in .07.

Here’s to the late nights that turn into early mornings,
Here’s to having no hours at work because you have to study,
Here’s to canceling plans every week,
Here’s to living in sweatshirts and sweatpants,
Here’s to being a NURSING STUDENT!
HAPPY STUDYING FRIENDS!

There are small, yet powerful actions we can take to create a positive culture within our profession. The funny thing is, it has little to do with nursing and everything to do with being a decent human being:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Walk into the onto the unit, smile and say good morning to everyone. This means who ever is in your path, smile & say good morning. It’s amazing what acknowledging the night shift, the techs, the monitor room, the secretaries, and anyone else you might see can do for the morale of those around you. Be kind & smile. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Ask the nurse you’re receiving shift form how their day/night was. I know it’s so simple, but when does anyone ever ask you this? They just jump straight into getting report & it’s as if nothing else matters. I know we’re all anxious to get out & get started, but something intentional like that question will 10000% be appreciated & make the other person feel valued & loved. Try it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Get to know the people around you!!!! Again, we spend most of our lives at work and we know SO little about those around us. In my 7 years of nursing, it’s become SO apparent how just simply getting to know someone makes a GIANT difference. Just have a human conversation? How are you? Do you have any kids? What are their names? What did you do this weekend? Do you have any hobbies outside of work? What do you do for fun? You’d be amazed how valued someone will feel when you try to get to know them and how it builds rapport across the board and leads to a better, more satisfying, & enjoyable day for all. We all are hungry to be loved and known. If your leadership isn’t going to set that example, you need to step up and do it! Get to know those around you! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. Write down affirmations for your day! - Always state the truths and be positive when battling in your mind! Have your affirmations handy or memorized to support your day! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. Never defer care to someone else simply bc you weren’t officially assigned! Every patient on that floor belongs to every nurse!
