Slate line-up via the long view. Check out that beautiful band of red in the purple at the foreground. So pretty! Looks to me like it’s from a seam in South Poultney. Richard Rupe - is she lookin’ like yours?... . Shop talk: for the past few days I’ve been lightly re-sanding this purple slate with 320 grit wet and dry. I’ve had this carving for a few years now and over time, with the work in and out of exhibitions, I have been (rather mindlessly) ‘freshening her up’ with light coats of my turp-linseed oil blend (3 part, 1 part). And now, with her very many topcoats, she has accumulated too much shine. ☹️ So I’m dulling her down today with 320 wet and dry sandpaper. I have found this grit to be the perfect final for my finishing. Anything higher will bring up a shine that, to me, is not pleasant. My preference for surface in my sculpture is to aim for the warmth of ‘luster.’ Forms read better when they are not reflective with light bouncing which, I believe, distracts and distances the viewer from a direct tactile response to sculpture. The shine I am seeking from my life is mostly from within when I am making work... I rarely know where a painting’s going to go when I start. That unpredictability, many years ago, would have driven me crazy…as I “knew” what I wanted to paint, and nothing short of that goal would suffice. It got to the point that when I began paintings, I got nervous with the fear of failure. I knew that with this piece the late afternoon sun, and how it was interrupted by the tree, was likely to be the subject. Maybe it ended up not being? Is the subject the shadows? The barn? The tree? Not sure. As the painting progressed, subject didn’t matter, but how things related to each other did.
