This weekend felt a bit like a pilgrimage to be part of something I’ve wanted to go to for a very very long time. #kukeri festival is a centuries-old tradition intended to chase evil spirits away. I went to Pernik in Bulgaria and my mind was blown. Here’s a few pics and videos of some of the amazing folk masks and costumes that were being paraded and danced with at the festival. Kukeri are elaborately costumed Bulgarian men, and sometimes women, who perform traditional rituals intended to scare away evil spirits. The costumes cover most of the body and include decorated wooden masks of animals (sometimes double-faced) and large bells attached to the belt. Around New Year and before Lent, the kukeri walk and dance through villages to scare away evil spirits with their costumes and the sound of their bells. Each January, the city of Pernik, Bulgaria becomes a scene of a unique masquerade ritual. Known as Surva Folk Festival, it marks the beginning of the new year. On the first night of Surva, Survakari, or groups of men, women and children parade the streets wearing specially prepared masks and costumes. They gather in the village center where they light fires and play with the audience. Early the next morning, the Survakari go from house to house, where they ritually marry young couples while a person dressed as a bear ‘mauls’ people for good health. Hosts await their arrival with a ritual meal and gifts. After the folk feast, the Survakari distribute the gifts, often collecting donations for less fortunate people. Inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible list, the Surva festival appeals to young people and raises their self-esteem as legacies of an ancient tradition. Whole families engage in collecting materials for the masks and the other attributes during that entire year, with adults teaching young people and children how to make the distinctive masks and costumes.
