The Yarkand River flows through Shache County in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. For centuries, settlements have relied on the river to produce a fertile oasis at the southern rim of the Taklamakan Desert. Today, irrigated oasis farmland produces cotton, wheat, corn, walnuts and fruit while supporting herds of yak and sheep that graze in surrounding highlands. /// Created by @dailyoverview, source imagery: @maxartechnologies
A 4000 year old cemetery in the middle of the desert strangely using wooden paddles as grave markers. If this doesnt spark your interest, I don't know what would. Have you heard about Xiaohe?

THE LEGACY OF THE SCYTHIANS IN THE SILK ROAD
The kingdom of Khotan was a Buddhist Saka kingdom in the western side of the Taklamakan desert, in the Tarim Basin. Saka was the Iranic name for the nomadic peoples known by the Greeks as Scythians, which at one point settled Central Asia. The kingdom of Khotan was one of those Saka-speaking realms that played an important part in the Silk Road. They adopted Buddhism, and were under strong Chinese influence during the Early Middle Ages, as well as Indo-Greek and Greco-Bactrian influence, mostly in art. Khotan was, and still is, an important source of the finest white jade, which was imported to China. The kingdom of Khotan disappeared around the year 1000 ad, conquered by the Kara Khanid Turks (recently converted to Islam), and a few centuries later, the area fell to the gigantic Mongol Empire.
The first illustration represents a Scythian warlord like those who came in contact with the ancient Greeks (and gave rise to myths such as the amazons and the centaurs), and the second illustration represents a Khotanese lady. The last two illustrations are Turkic warriors, not Kara Khanid but Turkic anyway. (I want to point out a mistake in the second illustration of this post, corresponding to a Khotanese lady. Her ethnicity doesn't match that of the Saka kingdom of Khotan. I made her appearance too much Mongoloid for that geographic area and time period. Khotan was culturally influenced by the Chinese Tang empire, but its people looked more Iranic back then before the Turkic and Mongol invasions)

⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀
