Today is #transdayofvisibility. I’m counting my blessings and taking note of my privileges as a white gay cis male today. Our trans friends & family members are facing historic levels of discrimination, abuse, and violence in Canada, the US, & around the world. I have the privilege of holding hands with my boyfriend in public in one of the most welcoming cities in the world, but SO many out there don’t have that opportunity. So many of YOU don’t have that opportunity. I don’t know what it’s like to face intense persecution or discrimination, I’ve never had to face what many have had to live with, and I’ll be the first to tell you I’m not the most educated on the trans community, but I wanted to take today to voice my support for any of you humans who identify as trans. So #tdov holds a very very special place in my heart. Without even knowing about this day years ago, it not only marks the day of trans visibility, but also the very day I decided myself that I would let my true self be visible 2 years ago. March 31st of 2017 was the first day I took hormones, and also the last day I decided enough was enough. It’s crazy looking back at this before picture, it was taken roughly an hour before I took them, and it really encompasses how miserable I was inside at the time. I saved the exact suit, the exact undershirt for a reason. It’s always something I’ll look back at to see how far along I’ve come, and let me tell you, wearing it today feels surreal. It’s not only overly big on me now (was a fitted suit to say the least), but it tells me that I’m no longer that person I was. I’m me. On today’s #transgenderdayofvisibility I am feeling so grateful that I have a church in which I get to worship openly as a trans woman. This is sadly not the case for many trans folk around the globe. ✨ To those struggling to accept themselves as trans because of religious teachings know that you CAN live your truth and still be loved by whatever God you worship. You are not a sin, an abomination or a freak. Statements like these come from the misinterpretation of early religious teachings. As society evolves and changes so must its religious institutions. ✨ Remember that you are all beautiful, amazing individuals worthy of love. And if you are not ready to “come out” yet, that is totally fine. Take your time. Just like the butterfly you are waiting in your cocoon until you’re ready to burst out.
