I’ve posted about this before... but getting classroom sponsors to buy one $1 book for every child each month through our @scholasticbookclubs order has been a game changer! My kids always look forward to seeing what their ‘book to keep’ will be each month. And they really love that we can read it ALL TOGETHER, with me reading & them following along in their own books. When I gave out their May book this week one friend said ‘Um. YES. A couple years ago I changed my policy so that any assignment could be redone for a higher score and I stopped docking for late work. Why? Because a lot of the time in the “real world” it’s not just one and done. We get second chances. I want to teach my students to keep trying and if they didn’t do great the first time, TRY AGAIN! If they forgot to turn something in, don’t give up- TRY AGAIN! At least for me, in 3rd grade, it’s a perfect time to be teaching them the actual skills. Now I will say there are exceptions to this rule, and if a student is relying on it so they don’t prepare at all the first time then I adjust. But for those times when life just happens or they really did just bomb it- I want them to buckle up and try again.
