My neck brace has been a part of my life for the past (almost) 8 months now and I have made some major realizations
But first. That pose we are all doing the boys named “team picture” (Also a screaming example of how uneven my shoulders are now)
Having had my illness be invisible for so many years (aside from my wheelchair but I wasn’t using it full time) and suddenly 8 months ago I put in the neck brace which is very visible, I have noticed some things
1) My mom gets less snarky comments and dirty looks because people are too busy staring at me (especially when I drive Wheelie)
Before the neck brace when she would put me in the shopping cart she would get rude comments (she now gets some about me having to wear a neck brace or people blaming her for my genetic disease - which are actually worse & happen more often) about me being a “baby”, “I wish I had someone to push me around”
2) I don’t know if the staring is better or worse being in a small town vs. home
When I am in Fresno people stare, but for the most part they try not to make it obvious and if they notice I notice them staring, they try to turn it into a conversation. Could also be because I don’t go many places where I don’t know most people
Whereas when we were in Truckee (very small town), people would stare and weren’t shy about their staring
But when we went to Reno, people were more like when we are at home. Although we were only in Benoni so there wasn’t many people and it’s really fancy in there
On the other hand there are the big cities (more common for international travel. Ex. San Francisco) where the staring is like no other. It is probably a culture thing but not only do people stare but they point
To be completely honest, I don’t care about the staring or or comments any more. It used to really bother me and I was really self conscious. All the staring (and vlogging) has helped me to be a much more confident person and a lot less talking anxiety (SM) so I am more likely to say what I’m going to say
I have realized that people mostly (although with the wrong approach) are curious. The comments are people who are more bold than the people who stare
He’s got another foot on this! .
