Camouflaged on the exposed riverbed of the Thames, I didn’t recognize this coin at first. I mistakenly thought it was a 17th century royal farthing, so I chucked it in my pile of miscellaneous artefacts to clean. As I carefully cleaned the coin this weekend, a woman’s face surprisingly appeared from the encrustation. Swipe left to see the 17th century trade token after cleaning.
.
The inscription on the token reads, “AT THE QUEENE OF BOHEMIA IN DOVER”. The Queen of Bohemia was the name of a pub in Dover in the 17th century, and it was named after Elizabeth Stuart, the eldest daughter of King James I and sister of King Charles I. In November 1619, her husband Frederick V was crowned King of Bohemia, but his reign lasted only a year before he was defeated in battle by the Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand II. She died in 1662 shortly after her return to England.

Dover is an ancient town which has been used as a port on the English Channel since Roman times. The token I found was probably brought to London when goods were imported to the capital from France via the port in Dover. If you haven’t been there, I’d highly recommend a coastal walk along the Cliffs of Dover and a visit to the stunning Dover Castle perched on a hill overlooking the busy port below. I especially enjoyed the tour of the underground bunkers carved deep into the white chalk cliffs. Swipe left for photos of Dover.
