The Balvenie 14 YO Week Of Peat was my fave as I loved that sweet peatiness, but the 12 and 26 YO Day of Dark Barley were amazing too. The spicy finish in the 26 YO lingers for ages. The Balvenie 30 DoubleWood⁉️ . A special DoubleWood 30 from 1997! that was “presented to the winner of the biggest fish”⁉️ What?!? This might blow your mind! . Out of nowhere, back in January a friend of mine from the UK sent me several pictures of this bottle. A friend of his had just gotten it from a guy whose dad won it decades ago fishing! I’m still trying to comprehend how crazy it is. . Apparently back in the 90s, marketing efforts done by The Balvenie included tiny bottlings with special labels. In 1997 it produced 12 bottles for Sharpe’s of Aberdeen, a fishing equipment store. From the letter of authentication, the bottles were awarded as prizes to winners of fishing competitions it ran while the rest went to customers around the UK. . This specific bottle was awarded to the winner of a competition in October of 1997. Because the label was for that particular event, it’s very conceivable that it’s a one-of-a-kind! . Now about the whisky itself. There’s no information on the bottle so your guess is as good as mine. There isn’t even an AbV! I assume that it’s a sherry cask finish like the DW12/17/25, but who knows. The Balvenie first released its official 30 year old in 2004, so this would be a 30 year that predates it! . It has been confirmed to me by someone who would know that this bottle is 100% legit. I still can’t believe it. I guess back in those innocent pre-flipping/investment days it was possible for the distillery to have some fun and do a bottling like this. But bottling a 30 year as a marketing promo? . I have to ask my friend about this, but it looks like his friend acquired it so it could be auctioned, as I just saw it ended up on auction in April at a smaller auction house. Had it been on SWA or WA I would have been all over it! It sold for just over $600, a ridiculously low price for what could be a historic bottle. . So nuts that a Balvenie 30 Doublewood I was looking forward to being released four years from now was actually released 21 years ago lol. Astonishing! .
