Yesterday we visited Balhousie Castle at Perth which is the permanent home of the Black Watch Museum. . . In the foreground is the Memorial to the 51st Highland Division which was formed by bringing together all the kilted Highland Regiments and fought with distinction in both World Wars. The statue itself is a Black Watch Piper in Second World War battledress. . . In 1725 independent companies from several Highland Clans were raised to police the Highlands on behalf of the Government. This militia force became known as the Black Watch. . . Following the Battle at Culloden in 1746 the British Government issued the Act of Proscription which banned the wearing of tartan, the playing of bagpipes, and the carrying of arms by Highlanders. The exception to that rule was the Black Watch which by that time had been formed into a Line Regiment in the British Army. . . Following the success of the Black Watch on the battlefield the Goverment continued to recruit Highlanders allowing them to wear tartan and play the pipes. . . In 2006 the Black Watch ceased to exist as an independent Regiment and became, Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 SCOTS). . . In recognition of the Black Watch as the Senior Highland Regiment the Royal Regiment of Scotland wears the Black Watch tartan, continuing a proud tradition that dates back to 1725.
