My type of movie #sxsw _ “The Highwaymen” (2019) is the new Netflix movie starring Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson. This film is a culmination of 15 years of work by director John Lee Hancock and screenwriter John Fusco. This 1930s western depicts the untold true story of the two Texas Rangers who brought down Bonnie and Clyde. _ Let me start off by saying that this is my type of genre. Films like the brilliant “Hell or High Water” quench my thirst for stylistic, slow, crime thrillers. As a consequence, I believe that I walked out having a deeper appreciation for what I had just seen than most others. The acting in this film is absolutely phenomenal. Costner and Harrelson step up to the plate and bat a home run by bringing a unique chemistry to the detective road-trip genre. There are plenty of feel-good moments which will have you pumping your fists in the air and laughing along when you’re supposed to. The directing and cinematography are absolutely on point in this film. Hancock has a deep appreciation for the wild, Texan West and it truly shows through his lingering on beautiful landscapes. The score is probably one of my favorites of the year, as it conveys a brilliant sense of urgency and time. I adored the commitment to the story by the screenplay. They focused on the reality of the situation, how Bonnie and Clyde were actually idolized by the publicación and how both the cops and Bonnie and Clyde were entirely right and entirely wrong at some times. The slow, sequenced script could appear tiresome to some, and I would remove a few unnecessary plot points which added length to the runtime. The editing is on point, and the humor hits around 50%. The movie also seems to drag during the second act, but the third act grips you right back in. They actually filmed on location for all of the pivotal scenes, and hearing about the elongated filmmaking process probably added to my enjoyment. For some reason I am in the minority as I have not read a stellar review for this film yet.
