"Do you want some coffee?"
After a girl is found dead, a weird F.B.I. agent comes to inspect the weird people of a weird town called Twin Peaks. Starring Kyle Maclachlan as Agent Dale Cooper!
I've never reviewed a television series on here. I, frankly, am making this up as I go. The best way to describe Twin Peaks as a whole is that it's hard to pin down. It plays in whatever field it wants to play in. One second, it's a horror story, the next, a comedy. It toys with the notion of genre in a way we are unlikely to see in any other show, save Lars Von Trier's The Kingdom.
Season one runs more like a mystery-drama with brief glances at the supernatural while season two dives headfirst into both the comedic and macabre.
Most of the show was controlled by arthouse auter David Lynch, and his own brand of narrative story warping is always present. When he took a break halfway through season two, the show suffered... when he came back it thrived.
Maclachlan performance also makes the show. Dale Cooper's chipper enthusiasm and bizarre mannerisms are engrossingly charismatic. Even though every character in here shines with life, Cooper is the only one who has a tangible and constant pulse that you can almost put your finger on. You want to be him and you want him onscreen for every second of every episode.
The horror elements are sly and creep in when you least expect them. Themes of torture, possession, and supernatural occurances are scant and sparse. They are withheld until the right moments and have a very dreamy atmosphere too them. Sometimes, all they are are dreams. Cooper has multiple visions that lead him down dark and twisted trails.
But what adds to the shows charm is it's soap opera aesthetic. Playfully, a fake soap opera is on every TV screen through the first season. The scenes on the show -Invitation to Love- often parallel the scenes in real life.
Twin Peaks is a lovely surprise for anyone who is a fan of genre, Lynch, and daytime television. It's an engrossing mystery and a familiar drama all at once. With its humor, it's narrative contortions, and it's cast of unique townsfolk, there's a reason why this show is still being watched today!
