Finished The New Me (@viking, @penguinusa #partner) and what a strange book it was. I’ve been comparing it to My Year of Rest and Relaxation, as the characters in both are at times extremely unlikeable. This book was lacking in depth for me, which is why I enjoyed Rest & Relaxation more. I think if the author would’ve written an additional 50-100 pages, it could’ve been a hit for me but I was left wondering what the message was that she was trying to communicate. If you enjoy unlikeable characters and unreliable narrators, I’d say give this one a try! ⁣ ⁣ Happy Saturday friends! At 30 years old, Millie is still struggling to hold down a job, a relationship, and friendships. Her snarky, quick wit makes people both love and hate her. This reminded me a bit of Eleanor Oliphant! Cute, fast read. ❤️ . . .

#partner @penguinbooks | I picked this one up because it was compared to Ottessa Moshfegh's My Year of Rest and Relaxation and I completely agree with that comparison! I appreciated that it didn't feel like an exact replica, either.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ This book is ultimately about the mundanity of office life, growing old, the promises for self-improvement we make ourselves, and the disappointment we feel when we let ourselves down. Millie, our main character, is a 30-year-old office temp who is going through a rough time. She is depressed, unsure of what she is doing with her life, has few friends, and an obsession with the TV show Forensic Files. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ This book is like indulging in all of your darkest thoughts about humanity on a constant basis. We all have those days where we feel negative about the world, mankind, and ourselves but hopefully, those are balanced out with better days where we celebrate our successes, feel joy, and spend time with people we love.
