Gear:
Owning gear is a pretty common and popular thing within the Therian and Otherkin communities. While having and wearing gear is a fun and enjoyable thing for many, it is not by any means a necessity. You do NOT need any sort of gear to be a therian. Owning and wearing it is purely an individual choice than anything else.
What is gear for a therian or Otherkin?
There really isn’t any limit to what can be considered “gear”. Gear is simply anything that can help you feel more like or connect you to your theriotype or kintype. This could literally be ANYTHING! From simple jewelry, to clothing items with your theriotype or kintype on them, to tails, ears and collars etc...
While many people may love to wear tails, ears and collars all the time, it is important to remember that there is always a time a place for them and other times it may not be as appropriate. Take school for example. I’ve seen many younger therians complaining that they couldn’t wear their tail or ears to school. While I would love to say that the school is wrong for taking your gear away, at the same time, I really don’t think that school is an appropriate place to be wearing tails or collars or ears. School is meant to be a place where you learn and as weird as it is, yes. Some people do get distracted by our gear because it isn’t normal for them. We have to remember that just because we are so used to seeing and wearing gear, doesn’t mean that everyone else is as well.
Like I said in the beginning, although gear can be a very enjoyable thing to have and to wear, it is absolutely NOT necessary at all. You are not any less of a therian if you don’t have or wear gear. ~Alpha Nova

Being with nature will always be healthier than in the big, loud city. The air is cleaner, the vibes are all good, and the world seems more vibrant and free. That where I long to be.. free to live as I want, not bound by the norms of human society. I always feel more like myself when I’m in nature. I can be who or whatever I please, I can howl to my heart’s content, and no one can tell me right from wrong. Or how to feel. ~Alpha Nova

I've been trying to wear my tails a lot more lately, they really cheer me up. Here's me with my huge fluffy platinum sitting by a fire!

▸ Since there are still some misconceptions about what "therian" means, here are the correct definitions:
Therian is a term for someone who identifies as a non-human animal. Usually, it's animals that exist/have existed on Earth, but some extend it to fantasy animal-like creatures as well (e.g. dinosaurs from movies, griffons, jackalopes, perytons), however, those are often called "theriomythic", as they are sort of between a theriotype and kintype.
Otherkin is an umbrella term. It is also a term for someone who identifies as non-human, as a species that does not inhabit Earth. These identities can range from fictionkin, mythkin, etc.
All therians are otherkin, but not all otherkin are therians.
A Theriotype is the creature a therian identifies as. If a therian has more than one theriotype, they're a polytherian. We are our theriotypes, alas they can't speak to you, nor do they need a name, or pronouns. It's as if you gave your right eye a name and talked about it in third person. Weird, right?

Gear tour! While gear certainly isn't needed to be a therian, it sure can be fun. First up is my lovely swishy coyote tail bought from a local vendor. That's my most stereotypical kind of kin gear. It's not quite right for my theriotype, but it's a whole lot of fun regardless. Next is my fang necklace. Technically it's an alligator tooth, I bought it at a local fair, but it makes me feel more animalistic whether its wolf or not. My moonstone necklace on the next slide is really special to me. It was a beloved gift, and the feeling it gives me is indescribable. The light reflects off it just like the moon, and having a little mini moon around my neck brings me a lot of joy. The wolf chain choker I made myself, so it's one of a kind. It's a little small, so I don't like wearing it too long, but it goes really well with my look and represents my identity. Last is some black ears I bought at an anime convention. They fit on me a little weird but my gods they're soft. Outside of those I have a wolf shirt, a paw bracelet and a collar that aren't either me at the moment.

What the favorite piece of gear you own?

▸ Just yesterday I posted about tails, and today my own fur baby arrived. It's my first tail, and I of course chose a coyote tail as it's markings and colors are similar to that of a wolf's, since USA taxidermists can't ship wolf furs internationally. I asked the seller, and yes, it is eco friendly/humane - I got it from an UK taxidermist, as shipping from the USA to here often costs more than the tail itself. It's exactly 40 cm/15" long, and quite fluffy. I love the natural curly texture and it'll be worn (and pet) with great pleasure. Decided to name him Khalani, the name doesn't have any special meaning, but I think it suits him (yes, I just called it a he, I believe it'll be very dear to me as it's my first one). photo credit ▸ Jim Brandenburg, me

▸ I am very aware that there are many posts about both gear and tails, however as I still see this happening, it still appears to be an issue.
To start off, tails are not a necessity. You are not required to have one (or more) if you're a therian. They're simply a way for one to connect with their theriotype. Yes - animals don't wear other animals' fur, but seeing a tail might give them a sense of euphoria, and petting it can have relaxing benefits.
Cheap tails come from cruel fox farms, where foxes are bred solely to be killed for their pelts. Cheap tails can be found on websites like Amazon, eBay, AliExpress, etc. Those websites are the most common ones for therians to purchase off of.
By buying a cheap tail, you support those exact fur farms. Is an animal's life really worth $5-$10 to you? Don't be selfish and greedy.
Once again, tails are not a necessity. They are a luxury item.
I understand why one might want a tail - all other therians have it, right? But if you do happen to want one (which, I'm not sure how a therianthrope that doesn't have a canine theriotype would benefit from it, but that's just my personal opinion), please save up for an eco friendly tail. Don't buy the cheap ones off of Amazon or AliExpress.
