Top Albums of 2018 #1: The Sheepdogs - Changing Colours If you’ve been following me this year, you are likely already aware of my newfound love for The Sheepdogs. They released their sixth album, Changing Colours, back in February and I got to see them live in October. Two highlights of the year! If there is any band that is keeping good, old fashioned, guitar-based rock ’n’ roll music alive, it’s The Sheepdogs. Their sound oozes blues, country, and swamp rock, echoing the likes of The Allman Brothers Band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Not exactly what you would expect for a band from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They are a band who has perfected their craft, falling a bit under the radar here in the States while amassing a big following in Canada. How it is that a band can play Massey Hall in Toronto but small clubs here is still beyond me…I just feel fortunate at this point to get to see them in such an intimate setting! The dueling guitars of Ewan Currie and Jim Bowskill are so tasty, and form the foundation of this super talented group. However, there is no shortage of instruments on the record - mellotron, organ, trombone, mandolin, ukulele, clarinet, etc. - which all come together to create a wonderfully textured sound. My favorite and most streamed song of 2018 was “I’ve Got A Hole Where My Heart Should Be.” My favorite guitar work is probably on the instrumental track “Kiss the Brass Ring.” Due to that fact that they are from Canada, it’s really hard to find their records down here. So when I saw them live and had the opportunity to complete their discography, it was a no brainer! I wanted to share a pic with their discography because not only was Changing Colours my favorite album of 2018, but The Sheepdogs were my favorite discovery of 2018. I had a chance to meet them at the show and talk records, baseball, record stores, etc. They are awesome people making seriously awesome music, and I’m so glad to know them now! They are going on a massive tour of Canada, Europe, and the US in 2019. Do yourself a favor and go see them live - you will not regret it!!! Breaking out my most colorful duds for one of the most colorful albums of the year - Changing Colours from The Sheepdogs. The Sheepdogs were a band I only knew by name a few months ago. It was a great post by @jammfactory that turned me on to this new album, their sixth, released back in February. If anyone is looking for an example of a band that is keeping rock ’n’ roll alive, look no further than The Sheepdogs. They play good, old fashioned, guitar based rock ’n’ roll. Their sound oozes blues, country, and swamp rock, echoing the likes of The Allman Brothers Band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. When I first listened to this album a few months ago, I had a lot of thoughts like “Wow, this sounds like *insert classic rock band here*.” However, listening to it now, I don’t feel that way at all. I feel like this is a band that has worked hard to perfect their craft, and has accomplished that feat. If I heard any of the riffs off this record in isolation, I could identify them as The Sheepdogs. I could easily go track by track and talk about how great each one is. The album passed the needle drop test - as soon as I heard the opening riff on ”Nobody” with the accompanying licks, I knew the album was gonna kill. My favorite song is the second, “I’ve Got a Hole Where My Heart Should Be.” It’s home to the heaviest riff on the record. While a lot of the riffs are crunchy, there’s also plenty of acoustic guitar and sweet pedal steel to bring things back down. It’s hard for me to not just focus on the guitar work, so I have to call out the rest of the musicianship on the record. Singer Ewan Currie has a stellar voice, and the rest of the group has the vocal chops to back him up. Everyone’s a multi-instrumentalist, and there’s no shortage of sounds - mellotron, organ, mandolin, ukulele, organ, trombone, clarinet, etc. It all comes together to create a wonderfully textured sound. The album seemingly runs long at 17 songs, but is only 49 minutes. Many of the later tracks are under 2 min. The album art is my favorite of the year. Very ‘70s and nature inspired. Classic. Just like this album. A modern, classic rock record. Who else is a Sheepdogs fan?
