Gun shots after gun shots, the war to end all wars is about to begin. The world before we know had changed in front of our eyes. Know one knew what was to come and know one knew that the war to end all wars ended nothing. It was a normal day in Sarajevo on June 28th 1914. People were roaming the streets, going to markets, talking to their buddy’s, and just enjoying their day. On that one single day many lives before we know it would soon begin to change. Archduke Franz Ferdinand happened to be out that day with his wife Sophie, enjoying the beautiful city of Sarajevo. Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were driving around seeing military members of the Balkan Wars, seeing an opening of a state museum, and as well their 14th anniversary. The day suddenly changed drastically. A member of Young Bosnia had thrown a bomb as Arch Duke Franz Ferdinands car, fortunately, the Bomb missed and only injured 16 people. But, the day was not over. Archduke Franz Ferdinand decided to change his route in Sarajevo. Ferdinand’s driver was not alert of the so change and he made a wrong turn, that changed history in a heartbeat. The driver made a stop and began attempting to reverse. Meanwhile Gavrilo Princip made the shot that single handily led to the outbreak of the First World War. Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Sophie are now perished in the hands of Gavrilo Princip. Nations erupted in anger and only a month later on July 28th 1914, the Great War had officially begun.

American Doughboys removing a casualty amidst the dense Argonne Forest in the early fall of 1918. In just two-and-a-half months of absolutely vicious fighting from September-November, the Meuse-Argonne Offensive would become the single deadliest battle in American history, with 26,277 fatalities, surpassing the Battle of the Bulge of 26 years later. My Italian-immigrant great-grandfather was among the men in the Argonne and was lucky enough to survive.

May 31, 1915 (102 years ago) and London falls victim to its first zeppelin attack of the Great War. That night a lone German zeppelin, LZ 38, droned over the dark London streets, carrying onboard 90 incendiary bombs. The raid killed 7 and injured 35, and resulted in £18,596 in damage (nearly $24,000 in today's currency and $1,002 in 1915). The raid was the first aerial attack against London in history – and it wouldn't be the last. Ironically, the LZ38 would be destroyed in its hangar by a British bombing attack just a few days later. | : This painting by artist Carlos Barocelli depicts one such raid above Westminster Abbey.

With a fatigued look on his face, Cpl. Erland Johnson of L Company, 58th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division glares in the general direction of the camera in the northeast section of the Bois de la Côte Lémont in Brieulles-sur-Meuse on October 2, 1918. The 58th Regiment encountered stiff resistance in their attempts to take the commune of Brieulles and the surrounding areas in the first days of October 1918. After successfully completing their objectives, the 4th Infantry Division was pulled off the line on October 19th, having suffered 7,168 casualties (killed and wounded). If my sources are correct, Johnson was born in 1860, survived the war, and died in 1939. (Cannot confirm this information.)
