Even the sharpest eyed among you probably missed the ticks hanging out on the yellow footed tortoise in the photo from yesterday, no way you can miss them today!  These are ticks that can only be found on this one species of tortoise which brings me to an interesting point:  The concept of "coendangered' species and 'coextinction' is one that often gets overlooked when talking about threats to biodiversity.  Parasite species with high host specificity are wholly dependent on their host population, so if their host goes extinct or falls below a certain critical population density  this can lead to an extinction cascade in the associated symbiotic species (parasitic & other). . . 20 species of co-endangered ticks have been found on reptiles. Threatened turtles & tortoises are hosts to 12 of those species (Mostly in the Amblyomma genus of tick, like these). Of those 12 species, 10 are endemic to terrestrial and threatened tortoise species including this yellow footed tortoise which plays host to 2 species of coendangered tick. . . Of course, co-endangered species aren't limited to parasites.  For example a variety of arthropods (well over a dozen spp I think) depend on Gopher tortoises - whether they share the burrows created by the tortoises or feed on tortoise feces, or in the case of one moth can only feed on the shells of dead individuals.  A really fascinating network of biodiversity that all hinges on healthy populations of tortoise: head over to @biophiliamanda 's feed to learn more, her research is focused on this! . .
