CORSET FAQ: Can I reshape my ribcage or hips with a corset?
The short answer: no. A corset will not reshape your hips, make them wider or more narrow, or get rid of hip dips. For most of us, your hips and pelvis are part of your natural bone structure, and whatever you were born with, it is beautiful and authentically you! It is possible to build muscle or gain/lose inches or soft tissue in your hip area (via weight loss/gain and muscle-targeting exercise) to make the hips appear rounder. Wearing a corset that defines your *waist* can make your hips *look* more proportionate and/or wider, if that’s your goal. But no form of body modification can alter the width or placement of your pelvic structure.
RIB TRAINING is VERY different from waist training. With the use of a custom made corset from a corsetiere specializing in rib training, along with help and close monitoring from medical specialists, it is possible to train your lower floating ribs to a SLIGHTLY more narrow or conical shape. It also would take SIGNIFICANTLY longer to see any results, compared to waist training - we’re talking decades, not months or even years. I do not know of anyone who has done this successfully.
WAIST TRAINING, on the other hand, reshapes soft tissue (fat and muscle) in your midsection over many months or years to define your natural waist. Sometimes, with many years of training, your lowest ribs may start to take on the shape of your corset, but the overall width likely won’t change. I have been waist training with exclusively conical-shaped corsets for 7 years, as I find they work best for the natural shape of my ribcage, but they are not for everyone - some find them painful! I’ve lost 11 inches off my natural waist, but I have not seen any noticeable change in my ribcage. My ribcage is still very wide for my frame, and I’ve learned to love it!

It's been a long while since I made a daily wear waist training corset for myself. This one has been a quiet side project for a few months, and it felt like a major accomplishment to finish it this afternoon.
Made with one layer of coutil and one of twill (the visible maroon fabric), this short underbust corset features 24 each 1/4" bones (8 flat, 16 spiral) and a heavy-duty metal zipper front closure, with grommets in antique brass to match.

Remember: Corsets don't have to be worn glamorously to be legitimate foundation garments. Your waist doesn't have to appeal to the eyes of others, or even your own, for a cinch to be worthwhile.
This little red underbust was made to be my workhorse corset, worn here with totally unimpressive, dust-covered clothing. And that's fine. What's important is that the corset you wear improves your life, be it through back support, improved posture, or a confidence boost. It shouldn't hurt, and my personal belief is that it shouldn't impede your day-to-day activities.

Managed to get my corset onto a friend to model. Sophie here is a 25" waist and this corset closes on her, giving her a 20" waist. She's very petite so it doesn't look that dramatic, but it fits her perfectly.
I'm really pleased with this corset, it was surprisingly easy to make, apart from the extra steps you have to take to use corset mesh.
I'd love to try making this again in different colours
I think I'm going to call this one the Iris corset!
