#tbt to the Sahara Desert in 2014! This is a 6 day race in Morocco through the Atlas Mountains AND the blazing hot areas and hike-a-bike sand dunes (Titan Desert). There's one bikepacking day where you carry all your gear, including your sleeping bag/pad. The rest of the days, you sleep in blanket shelters (haima) in the middle of nowhere. It's over 100F. The days were LONG - like 5-7 hours of racing per day. There were days I thought I would collapse. I remember taking a video of myself in my shelter almost in tears saying "This is too much." I got through it and finished 2nd. I've done a lot of races that have pushed me to my limit with extreme conditions or distances and all of them have made me better. The biggest takeway over the years is that you can choose to be miserable or you can choose to have fun. It's a powerful choice. So as you can see - for this sand dune hike-a-bike, I chose fun. There were camels and Bedouins walking in a line in the distance. The landscape looked like a canvas, not real life. Sure, I was exhausted and hot, but your thoughts and focus become your reality so I didn't focus on discomfort, i just acknowledged it and kept moving. DESCANSA EN PAZ, FERNANDO. Hoy día de cabeza gacha en la #titandesert2019. Ayer a última hora supimos que un compañero, Fernando Civera, había fallecido en las dunas por un paro cardiaco. Ojalá supiera qué decir, cómo animar a su familia, o a su amigo mexicano que hacía la carrera con él. Ojalá supiera decir por qué suceden estas cosas. Ojalá supiera cómo animar a los corredores que, hoy sin excepción, han pedaleado pensando que muy fácilmente podrían haber sido ellos. Ojalá supiera calmar la voz interior que que me hace preguntarme a estas horas qué sentido tiene todo esto. Y lo único que se me ocurre es que hacemos lo que nos hace felices, y aunque sabemos el riesgo que conllevan estas aventuras, si no las hiciéramos, seríamos muertos vivientes. Y esto nos parece mucho más triste que morir haciendo lo que nos da la vida. A toda tu familia y amigos, mi más sincero pésame. — A Fernando se le paró el corazón a pesar de estar preparado, entrenar, llevar muchos años en bici y haber pasado varias pruebas médicas. Hace pocas semanas había hecho el Camino de Santiago en 6 días. Por desgracia, como esos futbolistas a quien les alcanza la muerte súbita, le llegó la hora. A pesar de haberle tenido respeto al desierto, se lo ha llevado, así que familia, no le perdáis el respeto a estas locuras, nunca las toméis a la ligera, haced las pruebas médicas pertinentes, que aún haciéndolo, pueden pasar estas cosas. — Fernando, te tendremos siempre cerca cuando crucemos estas dunas.
