On this day in history, June 22nd 168 BC, an army of the Roman Republic defeats the forces of Macedonian King Perseus at the Battle of Pydna during the Third Macedonian War. While Rome was occupied with the Second Punic War, King Philip V of Macedon began preying on Rome's client states in the region. Rome made peace with Philip in his favor, but when he continued antagonizing her allies and clients, the Second Macedonian War was declared. Philip was thoroughly defeated and forced to make many concessions of power. When his son Perseus ascended to the throne, he sought to regain the power and resources lost by his father through the treaty. Rome declared war and Macedon never recovered. The Battle of Pydna asserted the greater tactical versatility of the Roman Maniple over the Macedonian Pike Phalanx in battle. The power of the Phalanx was rooted in tight-knit organization that made it nearly impenetrable from the front. The mobile Maniple, however, was able to lure its enemy over rough terrain, thus loosening its organization and creating an opportunity for the Romans to close in where their short swords were much more effective than the long pikes. Perseus was dethroned and Macedon was split into four nominally sovereign republics that payed tribute to Rome. When a pretender attempted to reunite Macedon, Rome declared a fourth war and Macedon was formally annexed as one of the first provinces of Rome's budding Empire. #totalwararena
