We had the opportunity to visit a native tribe in Alaska and see them perform many songs and dances. While we walked through their town we also saw many hand carved totem poles that were each unique. They often represent family lineage and cultural heritage. They include family legends, animals, people, or historical events. These were all over Alaska and so cool to learn about each one and what they each stood for.

This is one of my favorite details from my latest totems, and it’s funny that I almost wiped it. I knew the totem needed something light. I transfer painted these white rings onto it, but they looked too bright and harsh. I almost wiped them off but decided that maybe I just needed to get used to them. After a few days, they still weren’t growing on me, so I started sanding them off. That’s when I fell in love. Wonderful lines and marks started coming through and integrated them beautifully. I love when I get lessons that there really are no mistakes. There are just elements that might need more work.
These two totems are in their final stages. I just put the final coat of sealer on. Ready to peel off the blue tape—always a thrill!
My pink totem in 3 sections. If you piece these all together in a tall vertical , you get the whole totem at 9” x 6 ft. I really like mixing a delicate pink with grungy things to take away the sweetness.
