Way back in 1996 (I think!), I landed my first real scoop: revealing the existence of the unproduced Kenner Super Powers Man-Bat sculpt, thanks to the amazing @collectingcandy who sent me some photos of his prototype casting! This definitely kicked my web reputation into high gear, starting me off to many more scoops and the eventual co-founding of Raving Toy Maniac (w/Eric G. Myers) and Action Figure Insider (w/Daniel Pickett). A little while back a friend who had one of these castings asked what I thought the paint scheme would have been, considering the concept art had designs for a typical blue jeans Man-Bat and a more Sci-Fi version, but the sculpt seemed to combine them both. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣Did some research and surprisingly, Man-Bat was always grey (with pink ears/face/maybe hands); until the mid 80s there was never any hint of brown. Then with the prestige format reprint “Manbat vs Batman”, browns started replacing the original greys in the recolored stories (and this book was definitely when the Kenner artists got their reference!) Even Who’s Who (a prime source for Super Powers) has a tinge of brown on a mostly grey Man-Bat inside and all grey on the cover! His pants were historically green or brown. Then Batman: The Animated Series made him all brown with blue pants in 1992 and from that point on brown he has remained. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣From a 1980s toy point of view, I would pick ‘C’, but from a comic accurate version, I went with ‘B’, which was then refined to the final Pantone scheme (with a very warm grey as a compromise between classic and modern incarnations) that you can see if you swipe through.
