First shot of the day yesterday along FM813 in Palmer TX. The next 6-8 days bluebonnets are at their peak in Ennis Tx. If you plan to drive out this week, I recommend driving the north loop. FYI: The Meadow View Nature Area does not have the profusion of blooms it did last year. FM813 - Exit 259 in Palmer is a good place to start, and it hooks up with the north loop on the bluebonnet trail.

BBQ, Blue Bell, Bluebonnets. Helen and I went full Texan this week with a mini road trip to Washington County to search for the annual spring blooms. Fields were scarce, only a few small to medium patches along the country roads. We thought we had seen most of what the area had to offer until we came across this amazing piece of land on our way home. And at the perfect time! It was the most spectacular display of bluebonnets I’d ever seen!! We couldn’t have asked for a better end to our trip
In Texas, everyone’s loco for lupines — but let’s take a look at another blue(ish) beauty native to the lower 48! Wild hyacinth (Camassia scilloides) is a member of the lily fam and joins the show March-June with lovely lavender, white or blue blooms. This pretty little pile of flowers is a perennial, appearing primarily on prairies, plains, pastures, meadows, savannas, woodland edges and open woodlands. Bees like it, butterflies like it — we like it! Indigenous Peoples and early explorers ate the bulbs for sustenance. Look for these beauties soon, because they’re only green in spring and dormant the rest of the year! #txwildflowers2019 #texaswildflowers #hyacinth #growwild #foragingflowers
Fly lookin’ bee .
.
This was a really fascinating bee I discovered last Friday. The Orchard Mason Bee (Osmia lignaria) is a really stunning, shiny blue that at first look I thought was a Blue Bottle Fly so I ignored them for the first 20 minutes chasing other bees. When I finally decided to take a closer look at this “fly” I immediately realized it was a bee instead so I began to snap some shots. Not an easy task with a telephoto lens since they are pretty much the same size as a Bottle Fly and move as erratically as flies. Also, being on the Texas Mountain Laurel which is a small tree, the lowest branches were at or above eye level so my angle was a bit tough. Still managed to get a good number of shots I’m happy with but hoping to get some true macros soon as well as some inflight shots.
The Orchard Mason is an extraordinary pollinators. Just 250 to 300 females can pollinate an entire acre of apples or cherries. I’ve included a fuller crop of the flower for #txwildflowers2019 !
