This is NOT the “Ukok Princess,” and -so far as we know- this is NOT her tattoo. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 1993, Natalia Polosmak excavated #Kurgan 1 at the site of Ak-Alakha-3, on the #Ukok Plateau in the #Altai Republic. That tomb contained the remains of a ~30 year-old woman who died around 300 BCE. As she was the second burial discovered in the tomb, she is identified as “Ak-Alakha-3, Kurgan 1, Burial 2” (aka Ak-Alakha 3-1-2). Most of us know her by her nicknames: Ice Maiden or Princess of Ukok. Preservation was remarkable, and tattoos were found on her left shoulder, down the length of her left arm, and on her right wrist. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Three years earlier, Polosmak had excavated a different mound at a nearby site. Ak-Alakha-1, Kurgan 1, Burial 2 included the remains of a young woman about 16 years old. No skin was preserved, so no tattoos were identified in that grave. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Around 2010, artist Marcel Nyffenegger crafted this recreation of Ak-Alakha 1-1-2 for the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer, Germany. The reconstruction includes a shoulder mark that was *not* present in the tomb, but rather based on a tattoo found on Ak-Alakha 3-1-2. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 2015, various news outlets included this image in their coverage of new analyses on the Ak-Alakha-1 remains. Because of the tattoo on her shoulder, several sources erroneously reported this to be a reconstruction of the Ice Maiden from Ak-Alakha-3. Although this error was caught by @kristina_killgrove and others & corrected in some sources, it has since been widely repeated. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Given her status (as reflected by tomb contents) & what we now know about tattooing in the ancient Altai, it’s entirely likely that Ak-Alakha 1-1-2 was tattooed. It’s also likely that those tattoos included some variation of the #Pazyryk horse-deer or horse-griffin figure seen here. As we mentioned in a previous post, five Ukok mummies are tattooed with some variation of this creature. There is a ton to be said about the tattoos of the Iron Age Pazyryk culture (c. 500-300 BCE), but let’s start here: What is this creature? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sometimes called a “Pazyryk deer” or the “horse-griffin” this animal appears in tattoos of multiple Pazyryk mummies. The first image is an example from the arm of the man in Pazyryk Borrow 2, whose dual sleeves include at least 5 variations of the figure. Other versions are found on the woman from Pazyryk Barrow 2, the man from Pazyryk Barrow 5, the woman from Ak-Alakha 3 (aka the “Ice Maiden”), and the man from Verh-Kaldzhin 2. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The animal has aspects of horses, deer, lions, and griffins, and so is often assumed to be a mythical beast. However, it may instead be a depiction of actual costumed horses. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Horses were of utmost importance to the Pazyryk, & tied both to everyday life and to individual status. Their value carried over into death, when they were sacrificed for inclusion in most burial mounds. Those horses were buried with their saddles, bridles, & in some cases with costumes or regalia (see the second image for a reconstruction of one such horse sacrifice). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Gala Argent writes: “The space the Pazyryk people shared with their horses was liminal—in the relational borderlands of hybrid bodies and wills. Одна из самых громких археологических находок 90-х, «принцесса» с плато Укок. Благодаря вечной мерзлоте захоронение Пазырыкской культуры было обнаружено новосибирскими учеными практически в идеальном состоянии: прекрасно сохранилось тело молодой женщины, даже ее татуировки, украшения, головной убор и одежда. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Со временем выяснилось много подробностей: умершей было 25-28 лет (не так уж и мало по тем временам, когда средняя продолжительность жизни составляла 35 лет), она была знатного происхождения, но, скорее всего, была не принцессой, а жрицей; у нее не было детей и она не была замужем. Благодаря современному оборудованию ученые узнали даже причину смерти - женщина умерла от рака груди 4 степени. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Но вокруг этой дамы все равно много легенд и домыслов: шаманы считают, что это - героиня алтайского эпоса, дева-воительница Очы Бала, настаивают, что ее обязательно надо похоронить на прежнем месте, но ученые, конечно, против. Все нормальные люди ездят в отпуск в Таиланд, а мы как обычно в своём репертуаре Сами организовали экспедицию, разработали маршрут, собрали вещи и поехали! Изначально мы планировали посетить Укок, поэтому мимо моих любимых Джумалинских термальных источников мы проехать не смогли, так как они находятся прямо перед перевалом, ведущим на плато Находятся они в ста километрах от Кош-Агача на высоте примерно 2400 м. Источники содержат радон и имеют статус памятника природы Температура воды примерно 18 градусов.
