@plazi had a post asking me, what’s the first song, instrument, and who taught you this song. This is my first teacher, my dad. My first instrument the soprano that my dad is playing. The first song yellow bird arranged by my dad. Dad was born with polio, a degenerative disease that kept him from walking. Dad since the age of 3 was in crutches and never could walk “normal”. Dad married mom in the Philippines, and then ran away to US in 1980 with 6 kids. Mom not being a citizen had to work menial jobs that paid 1-2 dollars an hour. . Mom worked three jobs to make this family stay afloat. Dad did what he could and and played music for a living since nobody would hire him, being handicap. Dads first instrument was this same ukulele, that I learned on. He was a boy, and he was bed written and sick in a hospital away from his home Guam, after his first surgery. Grandma gave this uke to dad to help his pass time. Dad would listen the AM radio and he would listen to yellow bird this song we played, and he picked up melody, without having any teacher. He learned how to play it on his own! He then later taught it to me, and I taught to all my students. Dad attains the best ear I have ever witnessed. He could listen to one song, one time through, and know the melody, riffs, rhythm, bass, and drum parts. I wasn’t blessed with this amazing ear like dad or my nephew @a_cruz.tenorio. Dad doesn’t know the name of chords, theory, doesn’t know anything music, but boy can he play music. I remember as a kid watching him play live and seeing him rip on his guitar, and people stopping and staring at him... like did they just happen. Dad told me, you don’t have a good ear, but boy you got rhythm. Play bass or drums, but I stuck to it, and stayed true the ukulele. My dad and I both had humble beginnings this is how it started with this song and with this uke.
