So this is me rejoicing as I ran into the base camp 26.2 miles into my first ever ultra marathon @racetothetower - I was absolutely elated because a) I had made it, dodgy knee and all and b) I really needed to visit the loo.

My kids and in-laws were there at base camp and where so excited to see me, so I decided to stay for a while with them. Before leaving I needed to visit the plastic palace...again... Meanwhile my children and niece are waiting at the exit point with their “go mummy go” and “run Carly run” signs and are busy telling the guy on the mic (who’s job was to energise the runners as they came in and out of base camp) that mummy had gone to the toilet for a really big poo cheers kids .

So out I come heading towards the exit to start my next marathon and he asked me if I’d had a nice poo and if I had any advice for the other runners . I think I muttered something about too many bananas and not to tell your kids when you need the loo .

Anyhow... on I went and at every pit stop it was the same (thank goodness no guy with a microphone), and actually since the 8th June my body still hasn’t quite settled down. I have NEVER EVER experienced this - is this normal? And should I still be in this shituation 11 days on? .

I can only apologise to my followers who think I am completely gross and shouldn’t be sharing this kind of thing on insta, soz . However I’m really praying that there are also some who will completely understand (and hopefully sympathise with) my predicament. And then for the rest of you - hopefully you can have a giggle at the thought of me exiting a hot and smelly portaloo to be confronted by chants of “mummy’s gone for a poo” and that it’s not just your legs that do the running.

Wowzers! Who would have thought that a purposeful DNF would be my biggest challenge yet!
My previous ultra was a disaster♀️. I should have quit, but foolishly stuck it out& completed it but was mentally broken by the end. Anyone else push through, thinking they’re “in control” for not “giving in” but in reality, IT is in control of us♀️

My coach set the challenge of PURPOSEFULLY quitting & giving up BEFORE the end of the race! NO finisher’s high... ...no medal ...I was NOT impressed... It seemed such a ridiculous thing to do! Why the hell would I stop when I could force myself to get to the end! However, my coach is wise, & I knew there was reasoning behind the apparently mad idea & so I really wanted to be able to do it.
If you saw my insta story (“ABTF Ultra” highlights) you will know I had a psychological battle with myself, but...spolier alert!... I completed the challenge & became an official DNF stat! I COULD NOT BELIEVE I had managed it! (I guess a lot of you are wondering what is so hard about stopping, &quite frankly...I still don’t know, but it is! )
I feared feeling disappointed for not finishing, but when it happened it felt amazing! I had had a fabulous day on the trail & I was ending it while I was still enjoying myself!
It was only afterwards that I realised the true power of what my coach had got me to do. Finally, I’ve got some perspective & now feel ACTUALLY in control of my running instead of it being in control of me. So, if like me, the thought of a DNF makes you sweat, then maybe you could also try a purposeful one too? ♀️It was THE MOST FUN I’ve had on an ultra - no pressure to finish and no having to now pick up the pieces and mend myself afterwards
AND THE BEST PART?! Although only the finishers get a medal...I was still allowed a race t-shirt at the end!

And just like that I am RUNNING again!♀️
12 weeks ago I rolled my ankle on my final run before ATY 48 hour race. I rolled it so bad I fractured it. No running. 8 weeks ago I had my final eye surgery to try and close the hole in my left eye. Still no running. 4 weeks ago I had a minor surgery which I did not talk about and will keep that private. Still no running. 2 weeks ago I got poison oak. Covering the front side of my body. Still no running. TODAY I went to my check up with Dr. Chen. TODAY he told me the hole in my left eye is closed. (Swipe to see side by side pic) TODAY he told me I can drive again, I can go back to work, I can go up to 4500 ft since gas bubble is still there, and he told me I can RUN again. For the last 12 weeks I have had a complete melt down at least once a week. I have battled with major anxiety. TODAY my tears are happy tears. TODAY I ran 10 miles. If you have been following me long you know that 10 miles are my base miles I like to get in. I do have a cataract in my left eye which we knew would happen. That is a quick surgery that I will get done soon. Like I have said before it’s not why this is happening to me. It’s what is it teaching me.....I am continuing being taught that I can do hard things. That I am stronger than I think. I am constantly being reminded to be grateful for what I have and what I can do. Not what I can’t. I think I am being taught patience....but still not grasping it. ***Life is an ultra***
Now it’s time to get to work. Western States and Moab 240 training starts NOW.
THANK YOU all for your love and support thru this second round of setbacks. So many people to thank individually I will have to get back to that. But I have to thank my BF @jwanders11 who has been there for me EVERY SINGLE DAY I needed him. I was NEVER alone thru any of this. I love you babe.
