I have been remiss and not introduced myself for a while. So here’s an overdue hello to all the people who’ve followed me recently. If you’re curious, I haven’t always been an upholsterer. I once had a ‘proper job’. Remember the hideous recession in 2008? I lost my job and was struggling to find what path to take. The market was declining, so I needed to make a change. First step was to move out of my London flat, into a maisonette in Teddington. The plan was to save on rent, get a job and back into London. I needed something to sit on and it was the first time that I used Ebay. I picked some Guy Rogers Mid Century furniture and realised that the pieces needed a lot of work, but I also could see the value in this older furniture. I loved the process of choosing the furniture and fabric, this is when an idea started. Should I swap fashion for interiors? What if I could become an upholsterer? How very naive I was about the craft of re-upholstery, but that’s a story for another post! I chose one of the two upholstery courses in the UK, starting September in the Lake District. Upholstery training is not cheap. It meant sacrifices and saying bye to things I accumulated in my old life to fund the training. But i had a purpose again. The first week was hell as I was learning something completely foreign. Using hand tools was alien and the dust when you strip an old chair, so different to my old life and I did question what I was doing. I was exhausted, I realised the last 18 months had been so horrendous that learning upholstery was therapeutic. I loved learning how to make furniture beautiful again. Re-upholstery was re-building me. I passed my upholsterers qualification, but would I ever make a business from it was the constant worry. Fast forward to 2013 and Vintique Upholstery started trading. I’m so pleased that recession happened! It opened me up to a beautiful craft. People bring me their furniture, and I get to make it perfect for their homes. The trust people have is special. I treasure every share and comment and to those who have let me restore their furniture, you have no idea how happy that makes me, every connection I make, means the world.
