I Can Only Write My Name - Will Jay (incoming vent!!)) This song resonates alot with me, even though it was recently made. I’ve never heard of a song that actually spoke about being ashamed about yourself (culturally) Because all my life Asian Americans have been ridiculed as easy to push over so I became that role and I thought the only way to fit in was to try to ignore my own culture. I have tried for so long until a year or two ago when I decided to embrace my own culture, and I’m upset that my younger self didn’t try harder. Why I didn’t try to join my culture. I only just realized how cool and individual my culture is, and how much different it is from other cultures. I’m so disconnected from my own culture and even though my parents don’t care as much anymore, I still feel like a disgrace that I can’t even properly talk with my own grandparents or even keep up a normal conversation confidently. I always feel bad that my late grandma never got to hear me speak my native language and maybe none of my grandparents will never hear it. It’s such a huge burden since being Hmong, you’re practically nonexistent and our culture is slowly dying out. So many other cultures are so loudly proud and I’m always jealous since all my friends aren’t really Hmong and all the other Hmong people I know are quiet. They always boast about their Mexican, Filipino, Vietnamese, etc culture, while I can’t say I’m Hmong without someone saying “who?” “what?” I always have to try harder to be recognized. I just want to find my people so I don’t feel so left out and isolated, so maybe I can actually feel proud of myself. I wish someone was there to guide me through my culture, someone to look up to, but at the end of the day the only person I can blame is myself for not trying any harder.
