Here I once again wear a favorite 30s evening gown (from @shopmorphew) in a shot by @rcallahanphoto, reminiscent of a 1928 photo by Eugene Richee of Louise Brooks, without the long strand of pearls. An arm in this pose with the other down, or with both arms raised is a gesture of salutation in ancient Egypt (and with both arms raised appears as a hieroglyphic determinative for the word "to worship.") A similar pose to the Egyptian salutation appears in the Judaeo-Christian traditions, termed in Latin the orans pose (from orare, "to pray"). Other hand gestures appear in ancient art, adding significance to imagery. In ancient Egypt, an arm extended, hand bent at wrist, palm perpendicular to the ground, is used in official direct address (sometimes this reveals, in New Kingdom scenes, how the pharaoh relays messages to captured enemies—even though they are in his presence—without deigning to speak directly to them). Another gesture, made by some captured enemies (particularly those from the Mediterranean regions) is the mano cornuto, apparently a gesture to ward off the evil eye, vainly attempting to defect the imminent crash of pharaoh's mace into the groveling mass of symbolic foreign enemies in the ubiquitous smiting scene. With the index and little fingers raised, and the middle fingers touching the palm, in a number of modern cultures, the mano cornuto can be used in such widely divergent meanings as an accusation of cuckoldry, to a Wiccan symbol, to support for the Longhorns (I did live in Texas for a few years!). So while i strike this pose for aesthetic and historical purposes, hand gestures have much to teach us about ancient beliefs.

Can't wait to see Louise Brooks' early years in @chaperone_film!

Time is slipping through my fingers these days. It’s finally easter and I’m excited to have a few days off, though since I work in retail, that won’t be until late next week. I’m going to my mom’s for a sleepover then, binge on food, and have a movie marathon with her, as is our easter tradition What are you doing this easter?
