Swipe left for the focus of today’s ramble. This is my prized alto-clef ring that I’ve worn every day since my 15th birthday. This was around the same time that I decided music was it for me. It is a fun conversation piece “haha no it’s not a 13 or a B actually” but more importantly it has turned into somewhat of a promise ring to myself and my instrument. Me & U 4ever ❤️ *cue Brahms C minor 3rd mov* {for anyone wondering where it is from, it is from Etsy!}
Happy birthday Bach! It’s debatable whether today or March 31st is his actual birthday, but we’re just going to say it’s today I have studied the Bach Cello Suites numerous times throughout my life and I’ve learned something new every time. I find it so interesting that Bach wasn’t famous AT ALL in his lifetime and he had no idea how globally appreciated his work would become! The lifting of the fingers is the only unnatural motion on the violin
This is why Dounis put special emphasis on practicing this. The lifting of the fingers should be done with enough force to balance out the dropping of the fingers. If you ever feel that your hand is feeling sluggish in a fast passage, it most likely has something to do with not lifting the fingers properly.
Here’s three ways to practice the lifting of your fingers
1) Put your left hand under the neck of the violin and hit the underside of the neck with the middle joint of each finger. As you do this, lift the finger with enough force to make a sound when it hits the neck. Also notice that the finger naturally rebounds and comes back down to the original position. This is how it should be when you play.
2) Put one finger on each string, and go through and focus on imitating the lifting motion from the first exercise. Make sure to not hammer the fingers down, but instead let them drop with the force of gravity.
3) Pick a string and play this finger pattern 0434-1434-2434-1434 etc. Start off slow, and focus on the lifting of the fourth finger which happens at the beginning of each group. Gradually speed up the tempo but as you do try to put more emphasis on the lifting of the 4th finger, this is what’ll make it easy to play at a fast tempo

And so, a spring break of outdoor time ends and back to the land of cars and busy roads I go. Really enjoy the color of this truck though. One day I too shall drive around in a milky teal car. #milkyteal
In other news, if you’re in the LA area~ I am giving my senior recital at Colburn this Wednesday at 8pm ~ come out if you please!
What's the best tip I can offer that you won't learn about in music school? Set aside 30 minutes every other day for your computer.
.
Music school teaches you how to practice and how to play well, but no one teaches you how to network or to be a businessman. No one tells you that playing is only a small part of being a musician.
Respond to your emails, update your website, reach out to network contacts, send out your resume, plan your calendar, document your performances, log your expenses.
.
Despite how much time we dedicate to practice, performing is only a small percentage of what we do. In today's world, there is a huge amount of behind-the-scenes work needs to happen in order to be successful, and it's as important as playing. Be responsive, be organized, be professional. Happy weekend!
