There are not many places in the world that can flaunt such a long and interesting list of literary references, built over the centuries: the springs of the Clitumnus in Umbria, near the Temple we wrote about a while back very likely holds the record. The Clitumnus is born between Spoleto and Foligno, and after sixty kilometers dives into the Topino River, a tributary of the Tiber; it is the “sacred current” mentioned by Virgil in his “Georgics”, and the “beautiful river that provides shade with his forest” that Sextus Propertius describes in his “Elegies”. In a letter to a friend, Pliny the Younger wrote about this spring made up of “many and different veins”, which “give life to a pond so pure and crystalline that you could count the coins thrown into it or the stones glistening at its bottom.”

It could easily be a Game of Thrones' location, a little gem a stone's throw from Orvieto. The abbey of Santi Severo e Martirio (La Badia) was built around the end of the 1500s and today has been transformed into a beautiful accommodation facility. Some parts can however be freely visited, such as the area of the medieval tower from which, among other things, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Orvieto in the background. If you pass by these parts, don't miss a little visit to this unique place!

A walk towards the center of the earth.
Impossible to go to Orvieto and not to visit the Well of St. Patrick: about 55 meters deep, it was built to provide water and resources to the city in case of siege or disaster. The access to the well is through a double helical staircase with separate entrances that allowed to go down and up with mules to transport the extracted water, without ever crossing or obstructing, really an ingenious idea!

An Italian city i liked the most... This little authentic place is called #Perugia, the capital of #Umbria region. It is located kind of on a hill and it definitely dives you in medieval ages. Just look at its unique architecture (swipe right to check all the photos)! I spent only one day strolling along its narrow lanes and alleys, but that is the place i shall pay a visit again. I can barely explain why i was so fond of it, maybe just due to its unique, calm and historical atmosphere, i reckon... So if you strive to find not so touristy place in Italy worth seeing, you know which one to write down on your list.
