One of the top tier items on my author bucket list: attend San Diego Comic Con. Thanks to Macmillan and the incredible response WE HUNT THE FLAME has gotten these past few months, it happened (during the 50th anniversary, too!) and I'm still not sure it did. . In all honesty, SDCC is OVERWHELMING. My legs were killing me, my sweat glands were working overtime, and my eyeballs couldn't roll around fast enough, and it was simply THE BEST. I had three fabulous panels and two fantastic signings, and I'm so thrilled to have met so many awesome friends and made many new ones. . And really, the most stressful part of it all was my sisters sending me texts saying GO MEET THIS ACTOR. AND THIS ONE. AND THAT ONE. I don't think they really cared if *I* had gotten photos with any of them. They just want to see someone hold up WE HUNT THE FLAME to their fans . As is expected, I saw and met exactly zero celebrities. Nothing gets my heart racing more than fanart of my characters, and the fact that the uber talented @rosiethorns88 brought one of my favorite scenes from WE HUNT THE FLAME to life means the world to me. It's been nearly two weeks since WE HUNT THE FLAME released, two of the best weeks of my life (second only to when I went for umrah) for numerous reasons: 1) my book is finally out! 2) I had a magical launch party. 3) My street team and @sincerelyasma gifted me this beautiful artwork of Nasir and Zafira by the talented @monolimeart, one of my favorite artists. 4) WHTF debuted at #5 on the New York Times bestselling list, a seemingly impossible dream come true. . I won't lie, I worked so, so hard for this, and I'm not proud to say I barely slept these past two years, but that's the truth of it. I was condescended for even thinking I had a chance at hitting the list. I was made fun of for thinking I could make it in an industry where I'm an anomaly. At 4pm last Wednesday, when the industry gets to see the following week's bestselling list, I sat with bated breath to see if WHTF had made it. The minutes ticked by uneventfully, until my editor (@janine614) sent a text saying "it's 5 on the list!!!" and called me seconds later with the Macmillam team on the line, all of them cheering and excited while I shamelessly bawled, possibly the first time I cried tears of joy. . It's only the beginning, but it's been a long, winding journey, much of it slow and uncertain. I wouldn't change a single thing... Except, perhaps, the sequel. Years ago, when I had just begun writing, someone said to me, "no one will ever publish someone who hides their face. Someone they can't see." . I believed them.
