This little floof will melt your heart. A red panda cub was born at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute overnight June 12! The cub and its mom Moonlight appear to be doing well. Moonlight has been very attentive nursing and grooming the cub. Keepers are cautiously optimistic that the cub will continue to grow and thrive, though the first weeks are the most critical. They were able to weigh the cub June 19 and it was about 6 ounces (172 grams), which is normal for a red panda cub. Red pandas are endangered primarily due to habitat loss related to human activities. Scientists think their numbers in the wild have decreased by 50 percent in the last two decades. At the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, we work with the Red Panda Species Survival Plan to create a healthy population of red pandas in human care. #WeSaveSpecies #RedPanda #RedPandaCub

A new set of flippers splashed down at American Trail! California sea lion Calli gave birth to a healthy pup June 23, and the pair are bonding in a off-exhibit enclosure. Keepers have observed the pup nursing, moving and vocalizing well. They hope to determine the pup's sex soon. Look for the pup to make its debut at the Zoo later this summer! The Guam rail went extinct in the wild largely due to the invasive brown tree snake introduced to the island by humans. In 1984, the last 21 Guam rails were captured to start a breeding and recovery program in human care. The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (part of @smithsonianzoo) received the first Guam rails to be transferred for the program the next year. All of the Guam rail chicks born here are candidates for release to the wild. They have been released on Rota and Cocos Island, which are both free of brown tree snakes. Last year two birds born at SCBI were released back to the wild, along with 47 birds born in other programs. It marked the first time in 32 years that there were more Guam rails living in the wild than in human care. Now there are approximately 200 Guam rails in the wild and 116 living in human care. #NationalBirdDay #WeSaveSpecies #YearoftheBird #BirdYourWorld
