Had a lovely visit to the utterly gorgeous Springbank distillery. Tasted a blend on their warehouse tour which was transcendental. Not in picture is the haggis nachos at the Black Sheep Pub: also transcendental. #springbank #springbankdistillery #springbankwhisky #campbeltown #theamberlight #somebodyelsedrove
Perhaps our single most interesting discovery when visiting the Spreeside Whisky fair in Berlin: the Freiheit 1848 single malt whisky @spirituosenschmiede.

Matured in local Spessart mountain oak and bottled as a single cask whisky, this German whisky is actually promising. From what I remember, it cannot hide its youth but it is still rather mild and has a suprisingly long finish. When we publish our full report of the fair, 1848 will be featured in detail of course.

The name (freedom) is a reference to the German Revolution of 1848 when patriots fought for civil rights and the nation's unification - against the monarchs of Europe. One of its starting points was conference at the hotel "Zum Halben Mond" in Heppenheim. This is where the distillery producing the 1848 whisky is located now, hence the name.

However, it should be noted that the history of spirits, and whisky in particular, is a history of the rising middle class at the end of middle ages and early modern times. There is a decidedly anti-monarchical aspect in the production and enjoyment of whisky. (I really need to write an article about that!). So the distillers of the 1848 whisky chose a name which fits better than they may even realize.
And, as I told them, I totally love the branding of the whisky. Hopefully we can grab a bottle one day, and fully review the whisky proper.

I love learning about whisky history and culture! And I was amazed when I learned about the importance of cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh in the whisky world. You’ll find some really interesting stories about the blenders, distilleries, warehouses and bottling plants that I at first had no idea about. I initially thought all of the whisky in Scotland originated from Speyside, Islay or the Highlands. But there’s also a rich history to be found in the Lowlands. It’s really fun to follow the up and coming distilleries and current independent bottlers that have their base in Glasgow. I’ve not yet had the chance to visit @theclydeside but will try and do so very soon. Also always keen on trying whiskies from @dlaingwhisky and will keep a curious eye open to find out more about their upcoming distillery Clutha. And that’s only to mention a few.
And of course I will be very intrigued to find out more about @holyrooddistillery , @john_crabbie_co and @leithdistillery in Edinburgh as well ‘

Littlemill's last reopening was 1989 and it closed down again in 1994 after the owner went bankrupt. It was dismantled in 1997, and the remnants were destroyed in a fire in 2004. Two bottles of this original fluid golden #ScotchWhisky history made it to become part of my #collection

The first evidence of whisky was in the year 1494 when King James IV of Scotland granted a large amount of malt "To Friar John Cor, by order of the king, to make aquavitae'' - an archaic name for a concentrated aqueous solution of ethanol. After King Henry VIII of England dissolved the monasteries, making a large number of monks independent and looking for new ways to make a living, the production of whisky shifted to the general public. Thank you monks...
