Though forgiveness, understanding and compassion are relevant...I view: Education, knowledge of ones privilege and institutionalized racism equally as important. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We can talk about "choosing love," compassion and unity all we want in the community of yoga. However, I almost equate this sentiment to "I'm praying for..." This isn't to say that choosing love, unity, praying for injustice, or fostering compassion isn't needed. It is. But I want to ask: How does this language bring light to: Inequity, institutionalized racism and white privilege? ▫ ▫ The discussion of divisiveness is needed. The discussion of pervasive systems of power is nessisary. The Black Lives Matter Movement is about much more than police brutality (inserting that there are more officers who protect and serve their communities than harm them, let's please keep this in mind). Black Lives Matter is about a deeply entrenched systems of oppression, biases and yes, racism. So though it is easy (particularly as a white person) to be offended by this movement, responding that all lives matter....step back. Use your practice of introspection and mindfulness to observe your whiteness and the privilege your whiteness affords you. This isn't to say your life doesn't matter. It does. But it is to say: Educate yourself about racial and social inequity. Educate yourself about whiteness and privilege. Our world is not colorblind. It is divided by pigmentation. And though you may want to be "colorblind" and want all lives to matter...this misses the point. Because what is happening isn't new...it is as old as this country.
