KOYUK to ELIM Iditarod 2019 Leaving early morning before the sun came up our team was sandwiched between my friends Aaron Peck and Charley Bejna. They were kind enough to let me travel with them after the long run across the sea ice. We all departed from Koyuk within several minutes of each other. The snow conditions were still very abrasive not allowing the sled to glide to its maximum speed. During these long runs my mind constantly comes up with more efficient and streamlined ideas, so we can get better and learn for future races. I am always in awe of the power of the dogs. Miss Pantera continued to step her game up by vocalizing her enthusiasm. Banshee and Lord Stanley never wavered and we’re strong in wheel. You’ll notice footsteps to the right of our tracks. Most mushers will gauge how fast, or slow, the team in front of them are by comparing those foot steps to their own. I knew I had more power in the hills than most of the teams in front of me given the distance between those footsteps. Notice the village lights of Koyuk when the camera pans backward. The children in Koyuk were fun to interact with as they had many questions about the dogs. At this stage of the race, for me personally, it’s a tiring section.
