Behold an American treasure — there are only three original neon McDonald's signs featuring Chef Speedee that are left in service, not preserved in a museum or private collection, and this is one of them. This sign went up in 1959, when McDonald's was opening its 91st restaurant, a franchise in Green Bay, Wisconsin. McDonald's signage was in transition in those early years. Back then, the twin arches were on the restaurant itself, a part of the architecture. But the signage had a single arch, and in 1959, that arch still featured Speedee, the friendly, patty-faced mascot who was the face of McDonald's long before Willard Scott first dressed as a rather freakish-looking Ronald McDonald for television in Washington, D.C. in 1963. When this Speedee sign was taken down for a time in 2005, residents had a Big Mac attack, of sorts, fearing the super sign was getting downsized. But the sign, since day one in the caring hands of the Schanock family, who operate a number of McDonald's in the region, was simply getting restored. "It's one of a kind," David Schanock, the son of franchise's founder, Romaine, told the Green Bay Press Gazette in 2009. "Green Bay's a good spot for it — the tradition and family values." The building is a re-creation of what the original structure likely looked like. The first building was demolished for one of those 1970s mansard-style restaurants, which themselves are getting knocked down coast to coast in favor of bland, gray, square Starbucks clones. Something tells me the Green Bay restaurant will be safe and in good hands for a long time. Think of what a survivor this sign is — how harsh the winters are in Green Bay, how many cars and trucks zoom by it every day, how many vandals have made the sign target practice. Yet it still glows, not in a museum, or in our collective memories, but exactly where it's been for 60 years, and where it forever belongs, on Shawano Avenue in Green Bay, Wisconsin. #retrologist #wisconsinphotographer #greenbaywisconsin
