“Don’t wear that colour” they commanded.
.
“That colour makes you look darker,” they spat out in disgust. .
“Stay away from that pattern” they cautioned. .
“Those two colours is such a bad combination for your skin tone” they unwarrantedly expressed. .
“That colour clashes with your skin tone,” they stated disapprovingly. .
“Don’t wear that eyeshadow colour” you’ll look like a clown. .
Here, wear this colour. It’ll make you look lighter. Wear this pattern it’ll make you look slimmer. Drape this material it’s better fitting for your body. •
Having a de ja vu moment ladies? Don’t worry we are with you. All these comments were never doing any of us a FAVOUR. While trying on clothes we started feeling nothing but more naked because it was STRIPPING us of our individuality, STIFLING our freedom of expression and most importantly...SHATTERING our CONFIDENCE. •
This shoot was inspired by my African sisters. I love and appreciate how with their Melanin dripping skin they EMBRACE colours & patterns. They CHALLENGE and BREAK the rules society imposes on girls of colour in the fashion realm. We as their brown skin counterparts could learn from them. Let’s redefine what suits our skin and is flattering on our bodies by remembering that style and fashion is absolutely nothing without CONFIDENCE. So I encourage you to be bold, be creative, experiment and remember you are TOO GLAM to GIVE A DAMN. ♀️• So ladies, here’s the hashtag. Join the movement and share your snaps of you rocking what YOU WANT TO ROCK via #OwnThatColour and help spread the magic ✨

I’m so happy to finally be home with my family! This last weekend was such an adventure, & I enjoyed being on the road. Haven’t had a moment alone to myself in a really really long time and I’m feeling extremely grateful and inspired after meeting so many people beautiful, reuniting with old friends, and discovering new places! Now that I’m back, I can finally work on my acoustic set I’ll be performing at my first show on 4/20! I’d love to include those who have bought tickets and have you help me pick one classic Spanish song you’d like me to cover! I’ll be doing a poll soon on my stories so stay tuned for that, lovelies! • • • • P.S. I’m finally starting my online magazine where I’ll be posting ALL of my artwork. That includes photo/video work, music, articles, and upcoming events I’ll be vending & performing at from here on out! Be sure to give it a follow to stay updated! @lepetiteashley_mag ! ✔️ #lepetiteashley

When I posted about valuing the work of women of color, I lost a couple hundred followers and my first thought was “phew”. As someone who has long been outspoken about #race and #feminism I have long known that not everyone is here for you, even if they claim they are. If a person valuing themselves and their work causes you to flee, you’re not a good person.
But I 150% view folks who do not see the importance of paying for what they consume as dead weight and dragging down the space.
My entire income right now is Patreon and I’m excited that my work finally pays me a wage. But I still support 12 different Patreon creators who are all marginalized people because I see the value in putting back in a community where I am learning and growing and getting resources which add to the work that I do.
If someone doesn’t understand that simple fact they are not my people and more important they are a sponge, taking up space for someone who is a good fit who understands these facts and even if they legit cannot afford to give, still sees the value in supporting these spaces, not just when there is material exchange but when there is intellectual and emotional exchange. I get messages every day from folks that tell me that my work has been used in their university, at work, and just how they consume within their life. That’s great! And if it makes you feel good, that’s cool too. But that’s why what I do is work. Because people take what I give them and use it in other spaces. It’s there for that. But it’s still work.
But I truly never understand the people that announce that they’re leaving in a stomp and a huff. I see it all the time on celeb pages and I find it frankly mortifying and how very white. Because this space isn’t monetized I give zero f*cks if hundreds of people unfollow because they do not find value in the work of #WOC. I actually prefer that they do ♀️ because the people left are the gold
