Did you know the Frick has a bowling alley in the basement? We do! Henry Clay Frick and family were very fond of games and leisure activities of all kinds, and each of their homes included specific areas designed for recreation. The bowling alley at 1 East 70th Street was completed in 1916, and was installed by the Brunswicke-Balke-Collender Company. At the time the lanes were considered "the very finest bowling alleys known to the alley builder's art." After Mr. Frick's death, the bowling alley became the first home of the #fricklibrary, founded by Helen Clay Frick in 1920. The bowling alley was restored in 1997. Unfortunately, this space is not open to the public owing to modern fire codes… however, it remains a treasure of the museum, and one of the Frick’s best (not so) kept secrets. #PlayMW #frickcollection @museumweek #womeninculture __ Images: Bowling alley as it is today; bowling alley in 1924.

The Throne the Queen left behind . In the Hall of State in the Royal Palace of Stockholm stands one of Swedish history’s most famous objects: Queen Kristinas Silver Throne. It was made by a goldsmith in Augsburg – a wooden frame, completely covered in beaten silver. . Queen Kristina was arguably the most cerebral monarch Sweden has ever had. As early as 1649, a year before her coronation, she had flatly announced she would never marry: ‘I say expressly, that it is impossible for me to wed … I will be silent as to the reasons… I have prayed diligently to God to be of that mind, but I have never been able to find it’. Kristina had probably decided even before the coronation that she would abdicate. She left Sweden in 1654. The Silver Throne she left in Stockholm. . #WomeninCulture Madeleine Vionnet (1876-1975, France) was one of the greatest artistic couturiers in the history of modern fashion. Her beautiful and sensual gowns, draped on the bias, reshaped the look of early twentieth-century fashion. Her work will be featured in the upcoming exhibition Paris, Capital of Fashion opening Sept. 6. _____________________ #5WomenArtists #Vionnet #WomenInFashion #museumweek2019 #MuseumWeek #museumatfit #MadeleineVionnet #pariscapitaloffashion @museumweek
