"My mother spent days without food on many occasions but she always ensured that I never slept hungry. She would leave home very early to sell vegetables, leaving me with my sister. Now it’s time to give it back,” Jamuna had said in May 2019, after winning gold at the India Open International Boxing Tournament.
Having lost her father when she was just 10, Jamuna and her two elder siblings were single-handedly raised by her mother in a tin-hut roof.
Selling vegetables to fuel her daughter’s boxing dreams, Jamuna's mother sent her to join Sports Authority of India in Guwahati.
Initially, 12-year-old Jamuna struggled to cope with hostel life at SAI “Everyone’s dads would come on every weekend and they would ask me about my father. I would go and cry in a corner", she says.
But the gritty girl persevered, pouring her blood and sweat into training. And the hard work paid off. Rising rapidly in the world of Indian boxing, she went on to bag a number of medals in international events.
Today, she is a known face in global competitions alongside the icon who inspired her, Mary Kom!
Congratulations, #JamunaBoro! We salute your incredible spirit and dedication. #MakingIndiaProud #WomenInSports
"Gold medal for me and for my country at #PresidentCup. Winning means you're willing to go longer, work harder & give more effort than anyone else," tweeted #MagnificentMary after her stunning victory.
The six-time world champion claimed the gold medal without breaking a sweat in the 23rd President's Cup, decimating Australia's April Frank in a lop-sided 51kg bout final in Indonesia on Sunday.
Way to go, Mary! We couldn't be prouder. #MakingIndiaProud #WomenInSports #GOAT
"Initially, my parents objected to my dream of becoming a football player. But later, they accepted my wish when they saw my passion for the game", says B. Mariammal in an interview.
An ardent fan of football, Mariammal picked up the basics of the sport from her elder brother. With dreams in her eyes and determination in her heart, she then got down work.
Even though she was unable to afford any gear, equipment or even the right boots, the hardworking girl from Salem began rigorously testing and honing her skills every single day.
Mariammal's performance in local tournaments brought her on the radar of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, who extended a helping hand with her training.
And finally, her hard work bore fruit in the National Youth Soccer Tournament 2018 in Goa, where she scored 12 goals.
Subsequently, she was selected for the Indian team in the Under-17 category for FIFA World Cup!
You go, girl! We will be rooting for you. #Inspiration #WomenInSports #DailyNews
