Stuff is happening!! This could have been done a while ago, I think, if I had used a router and my table saw. But I'm having so much fun doing everything by hand. One more stretcher to mortise out for and possibly a cross piece to support the bottom shelf. Then it's time to glue up everything!!

Good morning from sunny autumn Brisbane, it’s a beautiful day and while I wait for today’s students to arrive I’ve just put some finishing touches on the installation of the vise hardware on my new personal bench. American White Oak, 2400x630x890mm, the top is 75mm thick, the legs, rails and stiles are 150x90 in section. Finished in a 50:50 of BLO/turps. Lower shelf, sliding deadman both faces and the rails are set at a height that not only makes it a comfortable footrest for when I’m sitting at the bench but so I can also move this behemoth about with ease on a pallet jack. At the end of the day, a workbench is a tool, and it’s primary function is to hold/secure/support your workpieces for your work. Your work, as an individual - WHAT you like to make and HOW you like to make it with what TOOLS you like to use. With this in mind, I put a lot of thought and research into choosing vise hardware. I finally decided on three mechanisms. On the primary face of my bench I chose a @hntgordon bench vise and a @leevalleytools quick-release sliding tail vise. On the opposite face I chose the @hntgordon patternmakers vise. These @hntgordon vise mechanisms have to be seen to be believed. The fit and finish is first class, they’re easy to install, the action/movement is smooth and, best of all, they grip superbly with zero racking. They truly are a marvel of engineering and it’s us simple woodworkers who can now benefit from Terry’s ingenuity. Trust me, these will be the last vise mechs you ever need to buy and use. I’ve had a lot of students come through and build their own benches with other sliding tail vises and don’t get me wrong, they’re superb mechanisms, but I liked the simplicity of installation with the @leevalleytools version. All I have left to do to fully commission this new bench is to cut and glue in some leather vise jaws. Enjoy your weekend folks
