When you go into the hospital for pneumonia and end up having a surprise heart biopsy, it’s a great reminder that sometimes there’s never a dull moment. This photo was taken right before I went in for the procedure. All is well and I’m doing great.
During my stay, one of the nurses shared with me that a wall fell on her leg after an earthquake in Haiti. She lost her mother and father, and almost needed a leg amputation.
You never know what people have been through in life. It was another affirmation that while we don’t need to live in fear, we should never take our health for granted. And in spite of everything, there will still be reasons to smile. And don’t worry-I am out of the hospital and feeling good!
It’s #WorldHeartDay so I thought I would post this phenomenal vascular corrosion cast of a heart by Dr. Christoph von Horst. Corrosion casts are often used in research to obtain the volume or surface area of the vascular system within in an organ. The earliest known use of corrosion casting was by the scientist Robert Boyle in 1663. In this example: the red represents the arterial blood supply and blue represents the venous blood supply through the organ. The casting process begins with the draining of blood from vessels to prevent blockage from clotting. The vessels are then filled with a solidifying material such as resin, which is allowed to cure and harden. Surrounding tissue is dissolved away using a corrosive chemical (commonly potassium hydroxide). If you follow me on Twitter (DrLindseyFitz), you can find more examples of preserved hearts for #WorldHeartDay! #sciart #specimen #heart #histmed #medicalhistorian #historian #histsci #medstudent #medschoollife #nursingstudent #nursing
