✨So Much Magic & Sleepy Dust ✨
Our new @babytula #JuliaJames #RingSling not only proved to be gorgeous #IRL but powerful as well. More than a piece of fabric✨
.
.
It’s another home for you and your baby, a safe place to go when anxiety threatens to keep you on the sidelines. New places and experiences can be nerve-wracking for baby and mama. Having this familiar “piece of fabric” to act as your second pair of hands can make all the difference. #holdthemclose #ringsling #reddingbaby
Self-advocacy.
.
Warning: If you get squeamish about birth, scroll on past.
.
I spent NYE 2018 recovering from emergency surgery. On Dec 30, 2017, I had a 7 week old baby and I was waiting to get a call from the hospital to be admitted for an emergency D&C. Happy New Years to me right?
.
I had a fabulous homebirth with midwives, I successfully delivered the placenta, and the midwife team looked it over carefully to make sure it was intact.
.
I healed beautifully, except at 6 weeks I was still lightly bleeding on and off. Maybe not unusual for some, but in my experience with my other births, it was. I knew something was off.
.
Under the current system, my midwife wasn’t allowed to request a postpartum ultrasound, so she recommended I followed up with my doctor who did the referral. I was assured on half a dozen occasions that it was normal, but I insisted on the ultrasound.
.
With the holidays, it was another 10 days before I had the ultrasound, and low and behold, what I suspected to be true. A small piece of placenta remained almost 2 months postpartum.
.
From there, things moved quickly. The risk of infection is serious and it was important to have it removed as soon as possible. I was sent to emerg, put on the emergency surgery list, and sent home with strict instructions not to eat or drink after midnight.
.
Tell a healing, breastfeeding mother of a newborn not to eat or drink water and it’s basically torture!
.
I was finally called at 8pm in the 30th to come in and I would be having the procedure under general anesthesia that night.
.
I had questions and there were many unknowns. I had experience with the procedure unfortunately, but I still didn’t know if I would have to stay overnight or be able to nurse my baby after.
.
The staff was kind. The procedure was quick. And I was back home tucked in with my babe by midnight.
.
The moral of the story, if something seems off with your health, or your gut is telling you to push further, a seemingly ‘normal’ situation may need more investigation.
.
Advocate for yourself. Don’t be afraid to be a bother, even though I know it isn’t easy. Your health is worth fighting for. (Con’t in comments)

Made by hand in Los Angeles. . . .. notice a theme with the names we chose? From top to bottom —> SAGE named for the desert plant California Natives used in rituals and as medicine, MOONSTONE —> like the grey pebbles we used to collect during low tide along the Central coast, and PACIFIC —> for the ocean I call home.
