Happy Monday! Luckily it didn’t snow inside the warehouse this weekend and your greens (and purples ) will be available as usual! Hopefully the rest melts promptly so we can get back to spring programming (though isn’t there always snow in the program around here?) ❄️☀️ #microgreens #yycfarm #yycfood #yyceats #yycchefs #yycrestaurants #yyclocal #eatlocal #eatseasonally #eathealthy #eatyourgreens #hustle #mondaymotivation #yycsmallbusiness #yycentrepreneur #indoorfarming #yearroundfarming #alwaysfresh #alwaysinseason #alwayslocal
Mmmm... Chocolate! As we continue to transplant Tomatoes to the fields, these Chocolate Sprinkles Cherry Tomatoes finally got to dig their roots into the earth and were surrounded by an intercropping of oak leaf lettuces. We will have two successions of lettuces while these tomato plants grow to fruit-bearing size. The lettuces will help to shade and protect the soil, reduce moisture loss from the soil, suppress weeds, and add additional photosynthetic capture to the bed therefore maximizing root exudates to feed the soil biology. In addition, the tomato plants will offer light shade and a windbreak to the lettuces as the lettuces come to harvestable size! Once the second lettuce crop is harvested, we will mulch the bed with straw and turn off the irrigation for the duration of the tomato harvest. #notillfarming #marketgardening #interplanting #cherrytomatoes #lettuce #yearroundfarming #biointensive #springbreak

Pea Shoots for CSA today! Great to have indoor harvest when we have flood warnings outdoors. Part 1 of 2.
Additionally, in the winter when there are fewer hours of sunlight (and therefore less photosynthesis) we love adding this high value item to our offering for our CSA and Farmers’ Market customers. It’s also great to have indoor harvest when we’re having flood warnings like today! The number of hours of sunlight is of utmost importance for us as we are growing food for our community - and our livelihood - via photosynthesis. When plants have fewer than 10 hours of daylight per day, they are not able to photosynthesize enough to support growth and development but rather are only able to create the energy needed for basic plant maintenance. This important period of fewer than 10 hours of daylight per day is called the Persephone Period for the Greek goddess of vegetation who spends her winters with her husband Hades in the Underworld and the Spring and Summer with her mother Demeter. At our latitude here in Sebastopol, the Persephone Period runs from November 18th until Jan 23rd! Next week!! As with anything, the Persephone Period is not the be all and end all. We are in a North-South Valley bottom, so our days are cut a little shorter because we have valley walls to our East and West creating fewer hours of sunlight. In addition, some of our trees shade certain parts of certain fields (creating fewer hours of sunlight) and these cloudy and rainy days decrease sunlight hours tremendously (even though they also keep the frosts and freezes away). Still, the Persephone Period holds weight.
As we get ready to leave the Persephone Period over the next few weeks, we are looking forward to capturing every drop of sunlight that falls on our farm. But, there is an amazing virtuous cycle at work when one maximizes photosynthetic capture while removing plowing and tillage from the agricultural system as we have... While our greenhouse may be suitable for most of our microgreens through the Michigan winter, some get the vip tent treatment. Thanks to our special attention in growing, harvesting and packaging, our microgreens have amazing flavor and shelf-life all year long. Ideal conditions equal top shelf quality. This is where the fennel, cilantro, basil and shiso all get their start.
