I went to my first Cacao Ceremony last night at @pyramidsofchi_ubud.
Damn.
It was intense in the most beautiful way.
I faced some truths I’ve been trying to ignore.
I let go of guilt I pretended wasn’t there.
We sang, we meditated, we cried & we laughed.
In the end, I felt raw as hell.
Like I wanted to hide in the safety of my little zen den.
But I also felt buzzing with SO much force, so much energy.
In the 24 hour wake of this journey, I’m able to digest all that came up & our a bit more.
And in that digestion, the most prominent feeling of all is gratitude.
Gratitude for the physical, mental & emotional pain I’ve been dealing with.
Gratitude for disease, for they’ve been a wake up call.
And most of all, gratitude for that deep sense of know- of TRUST- that all of this hardship has just been one giant lesson (or reminder, perhaps) to come back to a place of love #GLOWyogafam

I often get requests to share all of my tattoos & their meanings.
But the truth is, I’ve never really been drawn to do so for a variety of reasons.
First of all- I have 19, so it would take awhile.
Second of all- I guess there’s just a larger part of me that likes to have those conversations in person.
However, the story behind one of my most recent tats is one that I’m inspired to share here because I think it’s an important message to spread.
Last month I was lucky enough to spend a few days at @Thecovebali at Balian Beach.
I’m holding @Glowyogaretreats there in October- so I wanted to have a good feel it prior to the retreat.
I actually shared at the time how Balian means “healer” in Balinese.
This hit home for me at the time given that I was in the depth of a horrible depression & battling with ongoing illnesses.
Their angel of a driver, Putu, asked me if I was interested in visiting the local healer during my stay.
I’ll be honest, I’m especially skeptical about “healers” in Bali after the whole Eat, Pray, Love movement.
Although it wasn’t on the top of my to-do list, I agreed to check her out simply so I could make a credible recommendation to my retreaters in the fall.
He told me all about her & even reassured me that she was his family’s personal healer- but I remained indifferent.
On the morning I was meant to see her, Putu came to me & said:
“I have some news, it’s either going to be good or bad- I don’t know yet.”
I simply said, “ok, what is it?”
“The healer called me this morning & she said she can’t see you,” he began.
“That’s ok, I didn’t even really care too much about going-“ I started to explain.
“No,” he cut me off.
“She told me to tell you not to come because she said it’s very important you realize something. She wants you to know that you don’t need to see her, because you can heal yourself.”
With tears in my eyes, I laughed.
He felt bad & continued: “I don’t know what this means. She’s never said this before! I’m so sorry. I’m sure we can still go if you want.”
I stopped him & said, “no. This is more than enough. This was just the reminder I needed.”
And it was.

One of the common mistake in #headstand / #sirsasana is placing the elbows wider than the shoulders. If your elbows are too wide, you run the chance of actually flipping backwards. (Personal experience here ) To fix It: Try to put your hands on your opposite elbows as you are setting up. Then take your hands and interlace them to form a two-sided triangle with your forearms. Place the crown of your head down and squeeze your elbows towards each other AND down into the ground to maintain this shape.

Since all this health stuff has come up for me, I’ve found it really interesting to observe people’s response to it all.
Overall, I’ve felt a TON of love & support.
But there’s also been a lot of “shoulds” flying around.
I’ve said it before, but I feel the need to say it again:
We don’t need to choose one or the other when it comes to allopathic treatments or naturopathic treatments (Western or Eastern, science or herbs- you get my point). It can be a combination of BOTH.
I’ve had people tell me I SHOULD only go the natural route if I’m a true yogi.
Others telling me that I’m SHOULD take antibiotics for a staph infection (otherwise I’m dangerous/stupid). When the reality is that I’m doing exactly what my body needs- which is a little bit BOTH.
Here’s the thing, western medicine has saved my life.
Multiple times.
Sadly, these same instances meant very high doses of antibiotics, steroids, antihistamines & painkillers.
An ongoing cocktail that weakened the hell out of my poor liver.
Which is why this time around- I’m going as natural as possible, in the safest way possible.
If anything gets to the point where I actually NEED any medication, then by all means, I’ll take it.
In the meantime, I’m doing my best to get back to my most natural, balanced & THRIVING state through a variety of practices that are working.
For me.
For my body.
A few new ones that I’ve added to the list during my time in Ubud are infrared saunas & colon hydrotherapy treatments at @cocoonmedicalspa.
If you would’ve told me a 10 yrs ago that I’d let a stranger blast my butt with water, I’d either have either laughed at or punched you in the face.
But now I’m THAT chick who’s sharing about my poop on IG, because that’s how stoked I am for these treatments.
Yeah, it’s happening.
Five day detox program of juice fasting, butt blasting & sweating my face off.
Bring. It. On. #GLOWyogafam
