These movements are the fundamental patterns that any athlete should first aim to build some strength in before progressing on to more advanced exercises. For athletes of all sports these exercises should still be incorporated for strength throughout the week. ⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a beginner, or even as an intermediate lifter focusing on the progression of simple foundational exercises and gradually building up resistance whilst focusing on control and technique will open the doors for new avenues. ⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Establish your strength with these movements, and the rest will fall into place. I’m talking months of continuous hard work with these movements, then we can be more specific towards the needs of an individuals sport. ⠀

All these movements are equally important, so do not cheat yourself out of one area because you are only as strong as your weakest link. This list is also not all inconclusive.⠀

As an athlete it is vital that we also move in all different planes of movement so consider adding rotational variations you can control.⠀

Strength training for kids should be all about moving through all planes of motion and exploring a wide range of movement patterns. The Aquabag is great for this as the weight can be filled and adapted to the needs of the athlete. It is soft which makes it a great tool to introduce resistance training. And the water provides implicit feedback on the movements which supports motor learning! What’s your favourite exercise for kids?
