Hell of a week. The last day felt reminiscent of saying goodbye to everyone at the end of summer camp. Words can’t express the gratitude and appreciate I have for these folx who put their hearts and souls into this workshop. I’ve grown so much in the past five days and there’s so much more work to do. Thank you @annahindley @one_tilt @labfourseven @nmaahc for an incredible experience.

I am performing at Afro Future Fest. Yes, the one you’ve seen receive national coverage because of its race-based ticket structure. I’ve been mostly quiet about the controversy it’s caused because I don’t like arguing online. Similarly, I won’t be arguing under this post. What I will say is this- as a Black woman living in Detroit, sometimes it’s like I can physically feel gentrification closing in on me. All of a sudden, my housing applications in cute little neighborhoods are denied and I feel deeply uncomfortable or unwelcome in spaces that years ago White people would’ve never frequented. The vast majority of Black people and POC in this city, this country.. hell this world, do not have access to proper employment opportunities, healthy food, good schools, safe neighborhoods and even simple pleasurable experiences like attending a music festival because of the way that racism on a systemic level has done Herculean job at keeping Black people at the bottom rung of our society’s structure. There is a roughly $30k average household income gap between Black and White families. That gap still remains between college educated Blacks and their White counterparts. So to those who ask, “What if it were the other way around?”, IT IS. If I have to explain how (again), you have some unlearning to do that this post simply can’t aid in. Afro Future Fest was/is simply providing: 1. a systematic race-based solution to a systemic race-based issue that hits Detroit harder than most other cities 2. an opportunity for White people who understand and empathize with our lack of access to align themselves as allies in one of the most relevant ways that we lack it ($$) and assist in fundraising for the marginalized youth that Afro Future serves 3. an easily accessible space to heal, affirm and celebrate our Blackness So, @franchescalamarre, @reikiwithnumi I stand with you. So excited to announce that I’ll be returning to speak and perform at the United Nation’s @girlupcampaign summit this year in Washington, D.C. on July 15th. Last year I spoke for the first time at @girlupcampaign and it was far beyond anything I could imagine. I had always dreamed of being a part of this summit that brings together women who are leaders and pioneers from every corner of the world. I can’t wait to return to the stage once again.
